U3a
U3A has been mentioned on here a few times. I emailed my local U3A to ask if it's mainly for much older people compared to me (I'm nearly 53) but had no response. Is anyone here in this organisation and tell us their experience?

If all carry forward is used, and all the annual allowance is used, if i want to continue investing for my future am i able to contribute to a pension and request that no tax relief is claimed and what are the drawbacks of doing this rather than investing elsewhere. Many thanks for any suggestions in advance.

SIPP or not
I have a £1.25m pot which I won't want to access for about 7 years. It's currently managed by an IFA and invested in a portfolio of funds that matches my risk appetite. IFA takes about 0.7% and makes a couple of changes each quarter to the funds it is invested in. Any thoughts on whether I could better do this myself in a…

HL charges
Hi, Just a clarification on HL charges that I’m sure someone will know the answer to. If you have a SIPP with them for £100,000 and have £50,000 of it invested in funds and £50,000 in cash. Do you get charged £100,000 at 0.45% or £50,000 at 0.45% given holding in cash is free? Thanks...

35 years NI contributions
Hello, I’m 55 years old and hope to retire early (at 60). I’ve been in full time employment since the age of 19. Prior to that, I was in full time education. Looking at my NI record on the government website it indicates that I have 38 years of full contributions, 1 year when contributions were insufficient (maybe due to…

Pension/Financial planning when already retired
Is there advice available for people like me who are already retired and in receipt of state pension only but with a small amount of capital and a home owner? I came to this situation without any previous plans, just taking each day as it comes, now realising I should have done something many years ago. I'm 68 and in good…

CGT and Gifts with reservation?
I know for inheritance tax purposes 'gifts with reservation' are included. But eg if someone gifts a house say 6 years ago to their son and it's both their only residence and the only people living there, would the son be liable for Capital gains tax if he sold it after the death of the gifter? I know it would if the…

CARE pension scheme transfers and salary
Hi All, I'm considering transferring one previous CARE pension scheme into another current CARE pension scheme, however, my pensionable salary in my former scheme was lower than that of my current scheme, so my questions are: 1. Civil Service - Alpha Pension vs SIPP or Partnership
Dear All, I am a 24 y/o Civil Servant. I have contributed to the Alpha pension scheme since I was 19. Whilst life is very hard to predict at this juncture, I could see myself working in the Civil Service all my working life (sorry Telegraph readers!) I am already a homeowner, save 30% of my net income, and actively invest…

Discretionary Managed Funds
Does anyone else have an opinion on the benefits or disadvantages of a DMF over an advisory? The VAT is one disadvantage and the charges are appx 50% more, I am being quoted 1.08% inc VAT, is that high or low for a DMF? J

IFA Ongoing Fees
This is probably a stupid question, but ....... Why do IFA's charge an ongoing fee, typically 0.5% of the investment which seems to be an industry norm? And how long does this relationship normally last, assuming I move into drawdown mode in a few years time, I'll still have a balance of the pot to manage. At what point…

Is someone able to clarify the following for me. More in hope I think as seems unlikely. No pension contributions made in the last few years. Salary this year 65k, so i'm thinking to contribute 15k. Salary last year 65k, year before 78k, year before 104k. I'm right in thinking I can carry claim allowance for 3 years? My…

Should I pay National Insurance? To get state pension
Should I make voluntary National Insurance Contributions? I was born in 1981 in the UK and worked for a while, but for the past few years I have been living and working in Denmark. This means I have only made 7 years of National Insurance contributions, and I need 10 to qualify for state pension. It is very unlikely that I…

Pension query, please!
Hello... I wonder if anyone could answer a question for me, please? I understand that the weekly state pension for someone with full contributions is somewhere around £150 or thereabouts... My husband, who retired a couple of years ago gets £190 SP, and whilst I'm very happy for him, I wonder if some of this is meant to go…
