£100 Barclays mortgage challenge
If you have a rate better than 4.54% with no redemption penalties then you can currently get £100 from Barclays under their "mortgage challenge". They basically give you £100 if they can't find you a cheaper mortgage but you need to have no redepmtion penalties. Hope that helps someone (yes there are some people who…

Stamp Duty
Question for you all. My parents house is currently for sale at £320,000. It is now out of contract with the estate agent. Are they legally allowed to sell it to me for £249,995 and therefore leave me paying 1% stamp duty? Finally would it be legal to give them a tax free gift (£10,000?) once a year for 7 years? Any…

Property devaluation
Our house has backed onto fields for the last 9 years. It is now a building site and we feel these new houses have reduced the value of ours. An estate agent has now told us that we can claim against the builder for the difference in price - has anyone else heard of this ???? Seems rather unlikely to me. :-/

Woolwich mortgage advert promising £100 for nowt
Saw an advert in the local rag today from the Woolwich claiming they would give you £100 if they could not do you a better mortgage... Of course, "better" could mean many things, and there were no detailed T&Cs in the ad. But I wonder if it might be a way of getting £100 if you have done the sums and are confident you are…

Royal and Sun Alliance Rip Off
My parents are 86 and 78. A few years ago they decided to take out an endownment policy to cover any funeral costs and to leave a little bit over to pass on to me, their daughter. They were advised via a broker to go with Royal and Sun Alliance which they did. They've paid in nearly £5K now. In a Sunday newspaper last week…

Extra day in leap year
My understanding is that my lender is charging me an extra days interest this year (as it's a leap year). I am suprised they can get away with this. For exmaple if they advertise 4.5% per YEAR then I would expect it to be that when the definition of a year is as we understand it. Not 4.5% most years and 4.52% in leap…
