Nationwide, reducing the term, then increasing it?
Hi there, We are almost 4 years into a 5 year fixed (4.45%) 20 year Portman mortgage which has now obviously moved to Nationwide. My wife and I have talked about making overpayments but never really gotten round to it, being happy instead to see our savings grow loads, thinking that we might use some of these savings to…

Some MFW questions from a confused MSE :)
Firstly, hello all - I've spent most of the afternoon trawling through recent posts and getting quite giddy at the thought of paying off my mortgage early, especially with the wealth of fantastic information available here. I'm just a bit confused as to the best approach to take, and would appreciate some advice At the…

Mortgage to date: £115k Rate: 6.19% fixed for 5 years (4 years left) Mortgage term left: 9yrs Ive been saving as much as possible into an ISA but they recently cut my ISA interest rate to 0.5% so I thought better to be off my mortgage than getting no interest!! So ive just paid off £5800.00 off my mortgage to take to…

Halifax mortgages
Hi All, :hello: Let me start by saying thanks to you all....as I've been reading this forum for a few weeks and it has given me the much needed kick to start tackling my mortgage... I have had my mortgage for 4years on interest only...and never paid any of the capital off. Yesterday I changed my Halifax interest only…

Nationwide lifetime tracker question
I have 7.5 years left on a Nationwide lifetime tracker I took out last month. If I overpay the £500 a month then that would bring the mortgage down to 4 years. I know that Nationwide have a tie in of 5 years so how would it work if I pay it off quicker but within the £500 a month stipulation? Would I have an early…

small changes = paying more off the mortgage
Two weeks ago I went through our shopping bill again and felt that I could do alot better , so I cut back on brands and found crafty ways to spend less on our food. The result has been my food bill has come to £50 less per week. So I am now putting this money aside , and can now pay £200 a month more off the mortgage :D .

Staying put vs. selling up
Hi there, This is my first post on the MSE forums. I would really appreciate some advice on what might be the best thing for me to do in my current situation. In August 2007 (I know, worst month ever) my husband and I moved to our current home on a 100% mortgage at £207000, plus a £1500 arrangement fee tacked onto the…

when mortgage free...
do you tell people? if so does the comment "lucky you" annoy you? for most people it is not an element of luck but a lot of hard work and sacraficies that have been made. would telling colleagues lead to resentment? could it even make you job less safe? "well we could get rid of xyz, he doesn't have a mortgage to worry…

Mortgage calculator
A quick bump for the Mortgage Schedule Calculator v1.7.xls on this site, its awesome for keeping track of overpayments and comparing mortgage deals when you are remortgaging. I find it a invaluable tool for keeping me on the right track. Well done to whoever designed it.

Overpayments v Savings
Having read a few (and admittedly not all) posts on the 'Overpayment Calculator' sticky up there it seems to me that it's better to overpay your mortgage rather than stick it on some savings account. Or am I only seeing one side of the fence here? Are there instances where it's better to build up the money through savings…

Reduce mortgage term OR start a pension?
We are married (age 37 & 39) with 2 young children. We have £10k (just!) in savings (isas) and £180k repayment mortagage (about to go on 5 year fix at 4.69%). We don't have any pension. House currently worth £325k. Due to the death of my grandfather I am soon to be given £50k. I have never had this sort of money and want…

Limited to 10% OP per year .....
Hi there, This may sound a stupid question (and it may well be!) ... however, I don't know the answer and looking through the documents I have doesn't seem to make it clear either. I have an offset base rate tracker from the Woolwich, and I know that we are limited to only being able to overpay 10% per year. Which is ok…

Those obsessed with becoming mortgage free...
As I've said this site/forum has really helped me since I started using it. I can't wait (how sad!) to start overpaying my mortgage and will try to do so every month or when possible. My question is, once you start, do you get a bit 'carried away' with it all? I mean would you now think twice about booking that next…

Just made a 2k overpayment..
It's a lovely feeling! I'm still in my first flat, had it for 3 years now, and probably bordering on negative equity, as I got a 95% mortgage for £148k. Was on a 2-year fixed with Intelligent Finance but wisely moved from them when the fix ended to HSBC's lifetime tracker at 0.48% above BOE. So as the rates have gone down,…
