Too much draw from chimney - fuel burning much too fast
Hi I bought a property recently, and there is a open fire with backboiler - a Dunsley Super Clean. I recently had the chimney swept, so I fired it up today for the first time. The boiler heats the hot water and radiators - there is no mains gas in the village, but heating with coal should be very economical. Two problems…

Hi there, Been snoozing for a while. Now heard that, finally, the RHI is to become payable for domestic ASHPs from Spring 2014. But is it correct that it won't be available for newbuilds? Our ASHP was commissioned in June 2012 in a newbuild. We jumped through a good few hoops to make sure the system was commissioned by an…

Fastest way to make kindling
Just wondering if anyone had an outside the box solution for chopping kindling quickly. Other than a hatchet, I have tried fixing an old axe head into a work bench and whacked the kindling into it with a hammer. This is quite quick but Im interested if anyone else has an idea or method that they want to share?

Boiler repair-charged for an improper job.
Hi, I was wondering if someone could shed light on this. My boiler packed up recently and an engineer came out, repaired it by replacing a worn part and left. The natural heating worked for all of 1 hour and then it packed up again. We called the same engineer out again and he arrived 2 days later and managed to sort the…

Should I open up fire?
I live in a rented property that is very old and has little in the way of insulation etc. It is very expensive to heat (about £2k per year). The living room has an open fire that we temporarily blocked up years ago when we moved in and I want to open it up. Firstly, I think it will give additional heat in what is a chilly…

Suing over a 'bad' stove installation?
A woman is suing my dads company (I say company, it is just him and one more) for 'incorrectly installing a stove'. It took more than one day to completely finish the work which was agreed upon before starting. While he was not there, she used the stove before it was ready, against his advice, and used it incorrectly (…

FloGas - yet another increase!
Hi all I had a letter from FloGas this morning stating they were increasing my price, and this works out to be a 12% increase. They are citing Wholesale gas prices as the reason, so I dug through the contract and have found that if they cite this reason, then on request they have to supply me with the relevant Platts price…

My water is not hot enough.....
I'm getting the hang of my little Aarrow 4 multifuel stove - I'm keeping it burning 24 hours currently and it kicks out enough warmth to keep a reasonably pleasant background heat downstairs (although not sure how it will cope when the weather turns properly cold!) however, its supposed to heat the water, and although it…

So, I have a stove, what now?
I recently moved house, and the new house has a solid fuel stove. Measurements are roughly 15x15x12 inches. Four vents, two at the top of the front face, and two at the bottom of the door. Inside, theres a removeable ash pan on the bottom, covers about half of the width, and a grill on legs, about 4" high. Its just been…
