Adding a new soil pipe/toilet
Hi folks We're buying a bungalow and want to add a second loo It'll be positioned on the other side of the wall to the existing bathroom, so the soil pipe will not be far away from the existing one - I assume it'll join the same drain Anyone got an idea of cost for such work? (Just the soil pipe I mean) Thanks in advance!

Buying a garden shed (possibly online)?
I've reluctantly come to accept that we're going to have to have a wooden shed rather than the block built one i want as it'll simply take too long to save for a block built shed. The current one is approx 9ft-x-7ft & i'll be looking at about a 12ft-x-11ft. Would've been a tad bigger for block but for timber i'll go 12x11.…

Pipes or water and radiator
The plumber has fitted pipes for water and rad in wetroom. I had expected these to be copper, but they seem to be white bendy plastic. The next step will be to lay screed., and I will have vinyl on top of this. Are the white plastic pipes OK, or should I ask for these to be changed to copper?

permitted development in a conservation area
Trying to get an idea of what is allowed/not allowed. Contemplating a single story extension at the back that will not go beyond the rear most or side of the house. Looking on the web, all I can see is that rules are different in a CA and will have to discuss with the council. Any advice on this? As far as I can tell the…

Love or Hate your Combi Boiler?
Hi, I am looking to replace the warm air heating in my home and would appreciate any views. We have a 70's style detached house with 4 bedrooms, single bathroom and downstairs cloakroom. The heating engineer has given us 2 options (1) Vailant EcoTec 832 combination bolier (2) Vailant ecoTec 630 boiler with a Main unvented…

Looking for better windows
I am not impressed with UPVC double glazing units because it looks like a lot of the light is stopped by the thickness of the uprights (3 inches) and crossbars (6 inches) that run across the window space and the whole frame itself 2 - 3 inches all round. It's about 20% of total light is lost, feels more like 30%. Ideally I…

Removed our gas heater... Now what?
My parents had the council remove the gas heater in our living room (which we have recently redecorated unfortunately) What's left is an uneven patch of wall with flaky paint around it and I'm not sure what to do next. Do I plaster the section smooth and repaint? My main concern is the flaky paint and how to deal with it.…

Gas boiler power supply
Hi, Boiler central heating does not work, DHW does work, EDIT: see replies below, the voltmeter does not work, so all this talk about voltages is not reliable. However, see second quote box below on this post. Also thermostat loop is earth, blue, red yellow, (blue not used). I would expect to see at the boiler end wall,…

Colouring masonry paint - help!
I bought some Sandtex Smooth Masonry Paint, described as "brick red". On opening the tin, it looked lighter than the colour label on the tin, so I tested it on a small piece of concrete, and though it was lighter, it wasn't too bad - but it's dried to salmon pink. :( Someone suggested I added a small amount of black…

Is the drain to the rear of my house publicly owned?
There's a small drain (surface water, I think) running to the rear of my house (I only know this as I have an inspection chamber with a manhole cover just to the side of my house, and I opened it up to take a look). I plan to build an extension over this drain (but not over the inspection chamber). I know that in order to…

How to remove paint from bathroom ceiling?
Hi, I am currently decorating my house to make it look presentable for sale. The bathroom ceiling has been getting flakey for a while now so I have decided to tackle it. However, what I thought would be an easy fix, has turned into a bit of a nightmare really. I have been tackling the ceiling by using a putty knife, but…

Washing Machine - Drawer or Drum for Detergent?
What do you use for washing clothes? I bought an LG washing machine, which measures the load by spinning a little bit so it knows how long to wash for. My previous washing machine didn't do this, so I used the persil rubber cups straight in the machine. I've found liquid to be the best for cleaning - I never see suds with…
