Anyone have a cleaner? What do they do?
I'm guessing they don't do windows & ovens? What about ironing - by arrangement? Do you use a cleaning firm? I guess this is good because they are responsible for finding an honest person & they would be insured for damages? Also I guess they supply someone 52 weeks of the year? If you got an independent cleaner I'm…

Water cylinder or combi boiler for shower?
We've recently bought a house with a shower that uses an old cylinder and cold water tank to supply it. There is also a really bad (and loud) shower pump. We want to update the shower supply but aren't sure what the best long term solution is. Our options seem to be: - Leave the old cylinder/tank and just get a better…

Recommendations for security cameras
Can anyone recommend a good (and reasonably-priced) security camera? Also - I am wondering if there are security cameras with integral sound recording (ie to capture attempted verbal intimidation). EDIT; Think it would need to incorporate night vision, be "wireless" operated, and definitely very easy to operate.

Submit plans for permitted development?
We want to build a one storey extension to the rear of our house by spring next year. I see that between 3-6m we no longer need to gain planning permission if the work is completed by May 2016. Our neighbours have an extension of almost 4m which is what we plan to do also. However, I think from what I have read, that we…

Chimney Hood For 60cm Hob
My new kitchen is all but completed. One oversight an extractor. My hob is 60cm wide and I've checked the Which? website, and they show only one Best Buy for 60cm hobs, the Whirlpool AKR503 IX. Not a very wide choice! I was wondering though what about a 90cm hood? Here there are three best buys ranging from cicra £230 to…

Problem re: doors
I want to put a door between an extension I have had built and the breakfast room. The gap between the room is 58"ish. I would like 15 pane glass doors and can get many pairs on ebay which measure 30cm each, which would be too big. If I got two 30cm doors, would I be able to make these into sliding doors? This would remove…

Venetian blind rods
I live in an old Victorian property and was able to buy fairly cheap Venetian blind for the high windows. It even was a straight fit and didn't have to cut anything off. The only issue I came across is that the rods (twist to open and shut) are fairly short (50cm), so I had a look on eBay, as you do, and found that longer…

Where to get hardboard strip which can be easily broken into correct size
I'm looking for a wooden strip about 75 x 50 cm x 3mm thick, with high friction on one side and smooth on the other. My neighbour told me that retailers sell strips of hardboard like this which can be easily broken up into the correct size by hand. Does anyone know what precisely he is referring to?

Transferring NHBC Certificate?
Hello, We have made a claim through the NHBC Insurance Certificate for some work to be done to the house. NHBC agreed to pay for the work in full (we have it in writing) but have obviously contracted the work out and the Contractors are in no hurry to get started. In fact, due to the nature of the work (exterior rendering)…

Full height metal stair spindles
We are buying a house with tight curved staircase to the loft. There is no bannister or spindles, just a drop down to the ground floor. Due to the tight turn we were thinking of putting in floor to ceiling metal spindles but despite searching for ages I can't find anything suitable- everything online seems to be waist…

Toilet cistern won't refill!
Hi all, I (just now) opened the toilet cistern lid to inspect why in the last few days there is water running for up to 5 minutes after each flush. On inspecting, I found that the valve (white thing in the photo) was leaking. I fiddled with something and then suddenly all (most) of the water flushed and not it won't…

Fit patio doors into existing bay window
We are looking at the possibility of fitting patio doors into an existing uPVC bay window - the window is angled with 2 large central panes, and narrow angled 2 panel side panes; it is a single storey bay with a flat roof. I don't want to lose any indoor space, so thinking of just fitting patio doors to replace the central…
