Gift Aid and Tax return
I have to do Tax Returns owing to the Child Benefit Tax-back. I carefully note all my gift-aided donations to put on that tax return but have a query. I made a donation through a charity website with confirmation email on 30th March, it came out on my bank on 8th April. Which Tax year do I record that as?

Another HMRC climbdown re MTD for VAT
Just for info for those affected. Despite saying for years that individual invoices must be entered separately if MTD for VAT applies, they've now backtracked and agreed that a single entry for all items on a statement is acceptable after all. It's just been one climbdown after another over the past few years with MTD, and…

Capital gains - or not
Hi I have recently sold a property abroad that I inherited (the person I inherited from was not a UK resident or citizen and so I paid inheritance tax at that countries rates). I have made a loss as the value of the property when I inherited it was higher than the sale price (so I'm sure I don't have any capital gains tax…

Tax code reduced by savings interest -why?
Hi. Just looked at my tax code for 19/20 and find it has been reduced by 'savings interest' of about £600. My normal 12500 allowance has been reduced by exactly the amount of taxable interest paid to me in 2017/18 tax year. Is this right? I know this was untaxed income and should be part of my taxable income, but the point…

Finding value of PMI
My daughter started work yesterday in the civil service. They agreed in writing to match the salary of the job she was leaving, but the offer letter (if I understand her panicky texts correctly) was very basic and did not state the salary. She is now being told the pay committee has refused this and wants her to take…

HMRC - always listening
HMRC has been capturing "voice prints" of callers - without explaining what they were going to do with that data - and hence without consent. https://ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/news-and-events/news-and-blogs/2019/05/ico-says-that-voice-data-collected-unlawfully-by-hmrc-should-be-deleted/
