2015 Council Tax Enforcement Notice
Just received an Enforcement Notice from debt collectors as apparently Wigan Council took me to court last year for non payment of £165 (now plus costs so over £300) dating back to 2015. It was for the 2 months prior to June 2015 when the block of flats burnt down so not surprisingly my mind wasn't really too concerned…

Rent a room V Landlord Taxes
Just saw thread re rent a room allows up to £7500 per year without any tax. But landlords renting house pay tax if they get £7500 per year. I am obviously missing something? Thank you for any replies.

Rent a room - exceeding 7500
WE currently rent a room on a board and lodgings basis and receive less than 7.5k so are able to just not declare it for tax purposes. WE have the possibility of increasing this to 10k but then we have 2.5k of taxable income which although below the income tax threshold for my wife will impact our benefits entitlement. Is…

Non Coded Income
There have been a couple of threads on this forum about Non coded income but appears no-one knows what it is and has only raised it's ugly head on this last year's tax returns 2018-2019. Searching HMRC or googling the phrase brings zero results. My husband (retired 5 years now) looking at his tax return summary online…

Suddenly put in M1 tax code?
Hi everyone, I've been in the same company since April 2017 now. In February of 2018 I moved to a new department as a secondment and subsequently received a salary bump in the form of "Acting Up" which would be paid out as a bonus every 3 months. Before this even happened, in July my tax code changed suddenly to 1090L M1…

Documentation from UK savings accounts for non-resident alien US taxpayers
Marcus UK won't open accounts for anyone who has to file a US tax return, because: Rules me out as I file a 1040NR as a non-resident alien. I'm a UK citizen, UK resident, UK domiciled, and have never been a US citizen, resident or any other form of US Person. No big deal as I can use other savings providers with similar…

HMRC Long Phone Waiting Times - Big Phone Bills
I am sure anyone who has tried to contact HMRC by phone will be aware that a lengthy wait 'on hold' is the norm before someone speaks to you. My last call cost me £6, and most of that was due to being put 'on hold.' From past experience, waits of 40 minutes plus are not unheard of, and given the phone bill cost, it's no…

Using my wife's Personal Savings Allowance
My understanding is that, because there is no IHT between husband and wife, I am able to gift some of my savings to my wife to make use of her 0% tax band for up to £1000 of savings interest (and premium bonds). She can later, if she chooses, gift some or all of those savings back to me? Is this common practice and legal?

Wrong council tax band
Hi I believe I’m in the wrong band for my council tax. I have done all the checks MSE suggest and it works out that I’m in a band higher than what I should be. I have tried to challenge this with my local authority but they want proof to show this, and it doesn’t include anything or any sites MSE suggest to check your…
