Personal tax account
HMRC haven't calculated my tax for 2017-18 yet. OK, they are behind. But what surprises me is that I can't see details of what they think my income was, so I can't make any corrections to their figures (nor even know if any corrections are needed). It appears that I have to wait until they have done the calculations and…

Two step verification - anyone else having trouble.
Anyone else having trouble with 2 step verification ? They send me an access code which I ask to be valid for 7 days (because I need to move from one place to another), but when I sign in again they send me a new access code rather than using the old one.

Claiming travel costs
Is it possible to deduct travel costs to my office from my tax return? I’m a full time employee, paying tax under PAYE but have to fill out a self assessment form each year. For the last year I have worked from home full time but I travel to the office between 1 and 4 times per month (at an approximate cost of £60/trip).

CGT - Baffled by Jargon!
I realise this may be the wrong place to bring my problem, but I am close to despair in trying to get the answer to what I believe is a simple question (though perhaps that just shows how ignorant I am). I bought 900 BT shares at 335p in the 1993 public offer. On 31 Dec 94, BT gave me 90 bonus shares (1 for 10) as per the…

Establishing market value for CGT purposes
Hi all, Looking for some advice - currently own a second home which was bought with the sole intention to rent to a family member for a period, whilst they save up a deposit and become in a position to get a mortgage in order to buy it off us. The sale price for when they do is pre-agreed as we're not looking to make a…

HMRC letter tax avoidance claim
HMRC have sent me a a very generic letter saying they believe I've used a tax avoidance scheme in the form of 'disguised remuneration'. I have and am under a Umbrella Scheme though the scheme informed me they are HMRC compliant when I queried this when joining. The HMRC give no details on the letter as to how they have…

Council tax not paid for 5 years.
I decieded 5 YEARS ago NOT to impersonate anyone or "Act" as if I am someone who I am clearly not. That is to say I learned it is a crime to impersonate someone but its an expectation to do so legally. The communications from the council were always addressed to a "persona" who would become liable to be levied something…

But if I enter the interest and…

Self Assessment - New Rules £1000 Free Tax Allowance on Property Rental Income
Hi there I have read that you can claim £1000 against your personal allowance instead of claiming expenses if they amount to less than £1000 but I am wondering if this is still allowed if you share the rental with a spouse and the spouse already gifts you the Married Person's Transferable Tax Allowance of £1190 for…

Dividend question
I am going to be changing jobs soon. Currently I salary sacrifice to my SIPP and save 20% tax, 25.8% NI. I then fill up my basic rate tax band with dividends as a director of a limited company at 7.5%. If my new job doesn’t do salary sacrifice then I am aware I will lose the NI :-) but am I right in thinking that if I…

HMRC refusing to accept tax return (becoming non-resident)
In mid-APRIL I sent in my 2017-18 tax return. Now, more than FIVE MONTHS later (and only 3 weeks before the deadline), they have returned it to me - saying they "cannot accept it". I moved to France and became tax resident from 1/1/18, and meet all the conditions for being non-resident from that date (no house in UK, not…
