Tax reclaim

Options
Hi guys

I have reclaimed my fuel expenses via rift refund,
Before my claim my tax code was S1185L,
The tax code after the claim is S1622L

Rift says that my wages will show that there is less tax being taken off and that HMRC will ask for it back

I have to keep putting the extra cash away until march apparently

Is that right or are they having me on

  • Were you claiming for the last full tax year to 5 April 2018?
  • Claimed for tax year 17-18

Rift don't want you to have the allowance in your code as it means less of a refund for them to get their grubby hands. How much do they take of your repayment.

I am assuming you claimed for 17-18 which has been repaid and your 18-19 code has been amended?
  • Expected return was £873
    Their 28% cut was 244
    Vat was £48
    I got £579

    Claimed for year 17-18

Year 18-19 code has been amended

before the claim £11,850 per year you earned was tax free
after the claim that tax free amount increases to £16,220
that extra 4,370 of tax free allowance (x 20%) equals an £874 tac refund (I'll assume you are not a 40% taxpayer)

HMRC won't ask for it back, but RIFT won't get their hands on the money before you do, so they are telling you to keep back enough cash to be able to pay them their cut as an actual payment from you to them

note however that because your mileage could vary from year to year there may be a small over or under payment by the end of the tax year if your mileage is higher or lower than the previous year's figure upon which your tax code adjustment was calculated. HMRC will deal with that by adjusting your tax code to over or under collect in the next year

well done, that is £248 you could have kept for yourself if you had just done 2 things yourself a) write a letter listing the figures you sent to Rift in the first place b) put the letter in the post to HMRC, not to Rift

the principle is no different to claiming uniform laundry "allowance"

  • Thanks for the reply,

Im not really clued up about these things, i was told about rift so i claimed with them, it wasnt until i was told that you can claim woth HMCR that i realised that i was basically done from around £240, then rift said to tell them if my tax code changes,

So for next year would i need to cancel with rift, and inform HMRC myself or wild they go by what i told them last year ?/?

you will have signed a contract with Rift which entitles them to claim £x from you under whatever are the terms of that contract

I suggest you read it, and pay particular attention to the section explaining how to terminate the contract, then do so at the first opportunity you can.
