Tax relief on pensions
Can someone clarify for me...... When you contribute to a personal pension I appreciate you can claim tax relief on these contributions if you are a HRT payer. Does this apply just to earned income? Say you had paid an amount of CGT that year from selling a house, would you be able to claim against the 28%?

Hi there. On the face of it this might seem a very straight foreward question but I'm just not sure. I bought a house with my now ex partner in Nov 2005 for £130000. This was paid for by the sale of my ex partners house (£84000) and the balance was paid by her brother. The deeds were in my partners and my name.…

Self Assessment Adjustment
Hi, Will try to keep this short. I got a statement for my SA today for the year 2012/2013. When I completed the self assessment I owed 345 pounds. I had received a P800 recalculation saying I owed this amount and it would be collected sometime in 2014. Knowing this I put this amount in the section saying something like…

company expenses now taxable benefit
I'd be really grateful for thoughts and advice on the following situation: I work from home (in London) as a PAYE employee but have to travel a lot either in or through London. I agreed with the chief exec that it would be cheaper (saving approx £600 per year) and less administration for the company for me to have a…

Start of Furnished Holiday Let
Last October my wife and I bought a flat to start as a Furnished Holiday Let. We started renting in March 14. I am unsure as to exactly what can be claimed as tax deductable up until the start of renting. Why won't HMRC send me a P810 form?
Last year I got a letter from HMRC informing me that I don't need to do self-assessment tax returns anymore. Yippee! (probably because I never owed them anything). The tax year just gone I donated a significant amount of money to charity, via gift aid, and since I am a high rate tax payer, I want to reclaim the difference…

Paid tax but earned less than personal allowance
Hi, My husband has been working on and off through a temp agency. We have just noticed that his agency had been using the wrong taxcode for the past tax year, they used the taxcode 944L W1 and were (according to a letter sent to us by HMRC) supposed to use 974L. Now he only worked there for about 10 weeks during the past…

Loom watches import duty

The item arrived in the UK but UPS is asking £508.33 custom Duty (commodity code: 9101210000) for 1920 pieces of watches. I did not expect to be charged the duty per piece. Also the amount they are asking is more than HMRC's…

Pension taken from pay - reclaim
Hello I have an occupational pension. The pension is take from my pay, assume my salary is £2000 per month, the pension (£200) is taken from the £2000 and not from my netpay (i.e not from what is left when tax and national insurance is taken off). However, do I need to submit something to HMRC to reclaim any of the tax…
