You can't edit the 'saved' reference on a payee. You can change the reference at the point of making the payment but it won't be saved. Delete and re-input would be best.3 -

The example in the HMRC page linked to, is, as snowman said, incorrect. The pension started on 4 January, which is a Sunday and payment received on Wednesday, 4 March, covering the period to 4 March.…1 -
