Direct debits protect you with the guarantee so if they are not taken (as they are a pull, rather than a push like a standing order) then you are not liable1 -

Went for the Santander 1yr fix @ 4.5% + the evoucher offer, provides interest rate of 4.8% with the evoucher. Happy with that and the transfer from Nationwide to Santander took 3 days.1 -
