When did Dinner plates become so big?!

I bought a new set of Dinner plates, for the first time in years and had to take them back, as the plates were HUGE!
So i got a different set, and they are just as big! In fact, so were the majority of ones i looked at.
Literally they are about double the size of what we need. When did plates get so big? No wonder there is an obesity epidemic, if people are actually filling a plate that size with food.
So I've gone back to using my older (smaller!) set.
When did they get so big, and why??

Have a look at Salad plates they should fit the bill as they are smaller than dinner but bigger than side plates.0

I have three smaller plates that my DD bought for me last year and they are ideal as I too am not keen on huge plates and find a smaller one more than enough for me0

I recently bought a new set of plates - 9.5" wide. They are pasta plates from Ald*s actually.
Never mind just pasta - I'm using them for everything. Shame - as I like my nice big plain white Waitr*se ones - but needs must...
I think it was the 1980s?? when they started upsizing dinner plates from memory - as it must have been then that I bought a new set of crockery and was astonished to see just how big they were.0 -
We also use salad plates as Tori suggested, these are from an old part service I have collected, and it also encourages smaller portions if you are trying to cut down on the amount you eat.
I have definitely noticed that dinner plate come larger.

We have a fab denby set and never use the dinner plates the side plates are plenty big enough. My mum did however get a cheap set from ikea and swears by them saying that they are the only plates she would ever buy. Slightly bigger than side but much smaller that dinner. They cost peanuts as well.
As for size of plate size of portion. Yes yes it makes a massive physiological difference. Well at least for me and my family. I am sure that a boffin will be here in a minute to offer scientific data but I can not for one second think that there is not a connection.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -
I have to confess I never heard of "salad plates" - my dinner service is about 30 years old, and if memory serves (cba to get up and find a tape measure) the plates are about 10" diameter. My dinner tends to look a bit lost on them! In fact, if I was on my own, I'd probably use a tea plate for my dins; but if I did that, DH would think it strange (he already knows I'm weird, don't want to confirm it any further.
)
I wouldn't want really huge dinner plates (I have heard that the "normal" size the days is about 12" diameter) for another reason - they'd take up too much space in the cupboard, and I'd have trouble fitting everything else in!If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
I've just measured the plate I use for my meals. 21cms, or just over 8 ins. Plenty big enough for me. The same amount of food on a standard plate looks absolutely pathetic.
As someone said, no wonder there is an obesity problem.I believe that friends are quiet angels

Yes, I've noticed the same thing. I found a few plates in TK Maxx that I use for myself as they're smaller than the huge dinner plates we now get.0

I think huge plates encourage waste rather than overeating. And delude folks into thinking that they are chefs lol!
1930s plates here (and a serving dish so folks can help themselves to spuds/veg) - left-overs are easy to save - and makes any grub look a bit more glam2022 | Back to the fold - need a Money Saving mojo reboot!
