Vegan milk recommendations

If you're vegan, what kind of vegan milk to you use and for what purposes? I'm investigating different types of vegan milk for the purposes I would use it, but without having to by lots of different types which ultimately might end up going down the sink :o

I use it for cooking (e.g. breakfast on the go type things for OH - muffins, porridge bars etc), cereal for me and tea/coffee.

I'm looking to see if there's a type of vegan milk that will fit all purposes.

I've tried Alpro in tea (verdict - grim, made it taste black and like I'd added sugar).

I've tried Oat milk in cooking, which works well, but in tea it looks clumpy and mottled

So ideally I'm looking for something a bit 'creamier' and suitable for tea.

Any recommendations?

Thanks :j

I drink tea and coffee black now, as i couldn't find a 'milk' that suited. but i got used to black tea/coffee really quickly.

I use Blue Diamond Almond milk for almost everything.

Oat milk is Satan's drink, vile stuff that ought to be banned :D

hemp milk is supposed to be quite creamy, but i have never tried it.

Did you shake the oat milk before use? you need to shake it up. The Oatly stuff and the MArks and Spencers oat drink are nice in tea

Thanks, I did shake it. I used Oatly. I might try the M&S one and the recommendation of Blue Diamond almond milk next.

I buy the small cartons of Rice Dream rice milk, as it's only me who drinks it. I don't bother with milk in tea and coffee now, but rice drink is good on cereal. I soak my muesli in it over night and it tastes delicious.

Hemp milk tastes like old rope...

I like rice milk for porridge and almond milk for coffee/chai (don't drink tea)

if you don't usually take sugar in drinks then make sure you get the unsweetened version of whatever you are trying or it will taste as though you have added sugar. Also bear in mind that whatever it is will take some getting used to and that you will, essentially, be having a different drink. I get unsweetened soya and add a little vanilla extract to take the edge off the beaniness without sweetening.

recipe for soya milk - advantage, you can control the sweetness!

Soak 6 oz soya beans in 2 pints water for 12-24 hours. (In fridge in summer to prevent fermentation)
Strain off soaking water and measure it. Rinse beans. Replace strained off water with the same amount of fresh.
Blitz beans and water in liquidiser.
Pour into large pan or preserving pan with 2 more pints of water, bring to the boil then simmer 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
Strain into a bowl through a cheesecloth or jcloth lined colander. When cooler gather up the cloth into a dolly bag shape and squeeze out thoroughly.
Stir in 1 dessertspoon of honey.
    Makes 4 500ml cartons-ful.
Can be frozen (don't worry, it goes brownish when frozen but returns to creamy colour when defrosted).
Give a little stir or shake before using.

The remaining ground soya can be spread over a baking tray and toasted for aprox 20 minutes on Regulo 4 - add to homemade granola recipes.
Alternatively the residue (called okara) can be used in any recipe for soya bean loaf or burgers - start from after beans are cooked and mashed.
Okara can be frozen if you don't want to use it straight away.

I use unsweetened alpro almond milk mostly - it tastes different to cows milk in tea but I got used to it. Interestingly, it puts more of a brown (easily washable) coating on the inside of mugs than black tea or tea with cows milk.

For cooking I mostly use water instead and add some more ground nuts or seeds if I want the protein or to add to the flavour.
