How do you celebrate your Birthday?

OH and I decided, some time ago, to go 'shopping' for my Birthday tomorrow. Whilst I am looking forward to a trip in to the city, the thought of going around the shops and looking at things I could buy cheaper elsewhere (eBay) really doesn't appeal to me as it used to :rotfl: I really do enjoy being thrifty and have never been materialistic; but I used to enjoy spending money on a new top or something for special occasions.
I'll just be happy to spend time with him, have a nice walk around and go for a hot chocolate in the afternoon. Simple pleasures :j I find it really fulfilling not to be desperate to spend, spend, spend all of the time.
Is anyone else the same? Given the chance to go and buy things full price in shops, do you decide not to? How do you like to celebrate your Birthday, thrifty style?

Hi and happy birthday
I couldn't agree more I don't enjoy spending money on things I can get cheaper elsewhere, birthday or not.
Honestly I would do the wander round the shops if you want to, have a nice drink ( and cake!- it is your birthday) and if you fancy go for dinner or lunch somewhere you really like. Or visit somewhere local that you really like, would like to visit, means something to you as a place.
It's a fallacy that people spend ridiculous amounts of money just because it's their birthday. Save your birthday cash ( if you get some) to treat yourself over a few nice things on eBay, or wherever you feel you get value.
I'm sure if you tell your OH you just want to spend time with them you will be onto a winner straight away.
Have a lovely day whatever you do

My choice of day out would be to go to Wrest Park and spend a leisurely few hours in the garden there. I'm an English Heritage member, so I can go as often as I want for no extra cost, and DH gets in free as my Carer. We pack our own food and drink to take, which we have on the way round - there are many seats for him to sit, and park my wheelchair beside, all around the gardens.
Trundling round the shops is my idea of hell.
That said, tbh, for my actual birthday I prefer to kick it under the carpet and ignore it.:DIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
My birthday is right next to Christmas, which has always been a pain, but my DH 'celebrates' my birthday the month before, and we either spend it together or with friends, but good food and wine is a must - we don,t spent much in comparison to a meal out - last year was an American Supper type affair, which was amazing, we we,re like weebles by the end of the evening.Note to self - STOP SPENDING MONEY !!

Happy Birthday for tomorrow!:)
I suppose your DH thought it would be a good way of getting you a present that you really wanted as he'd be there with you in the shops. If it isn't what you want then speak up and have a PlanB at the ready!
I certainly wouldn't want to go shopping on my birthday. I prefer to shops on my own in any event, DH would just get in the way;).
Over the years I've done various things including going away for mini breaks. And being greedy we sometimes celebrate several times with various friends and family.
For a day out tomorrow (my birthday's in the winter)I'd like to go to a NT property or to the seaside and either have lunch out or take a picnic or have fish & chips. I definitely wouldn't be cooking and some wine or bubbly would be involved before the day was out:D.0 -
I would go for a walk on a beach and have a picnic, if I had a summer birthday. For a spendy birthday, I would preferan activity, not "stuff". Theatre tickets are my fave treat. :-)0

I'm a terrible person and in awe of you all. I want things, pricey things too! I just can't help myself. For my birthday this year we went to see shrek the musical tickets were about £50 each plus I had gifts to open too. If I hadn't I'd probably have thrown a strop, stems from being a spoiled only child and the only granddaughter to boot.
*wanders off hanging head in shame*I'm not a muggle...I'm just magically challenged0 -
Ha ha ha! Funfairprincess!
I think your answer is very honest. Loads of people I'm sure feel the same. If it's your birthday, the least you should expect is what makes your day!!
I think theatre tickets are a lovely ( if expensive) gift.
I don't think you should hang your head in shame. OP posted on the old style board so responses were quite predictable, but not more or less worthy than your perfect birthday.
Once again OP, have a great day tomorrow let us know what you decided to do

I don't look for a present from anyone for my birthday, in fact I forbid it! Too commercialised and rubbish waste of money IMV, but each to their own and all that!
But me and himself do book our favourite restaurant, the window seats for two, great food, great view out on to a pedestrian street in the posh part of town, great for people watching and munching!
Then a few vinos in a lovely pub across the same street, and home on the last bus at 11.30. Very nice, and of course all paid for by himself, but I do return the compliment when it's his.
Am I alone in not ever wanting presents for birthdays (or for Christmas for that matter). Not that I care really!
And a very happy birthday to OP of course, enjoy!!0 -
Never fussed about my birthday, just another day
Last year was the big 50 and it was decided we would have a BBQ. I worked my arris off all day and night, didn't get a bite to eat and only sat down for a drink at 2am when most people had left
Not my idea of fun at all
Nor would a shopping trip go down well.
My perfect day would be the day off work, no one knowing, and being allowed to slob on the sofa reading a book0 -
Once in a while I have hosted a party at home with friends and acquaintances and ask them to bring a dish and a bottle. We always ended up with lots of food and drink and so I hosted an after party party to finish the stuff. Lovely fun.
Once I splashed out on a "catered" party, I negotiated a really good price with my local curry house and had them bring cooked pilau rice, veg curry and dal for all of us. It was more expensive than the usual bring a dish thing, but a lot less work and everybody loved it. One couple loved it so much that they booked the same curry house to cater for the husband's birthday party, especially when they realised how cheaply I got it for!
This year I haven't decided yet what to do.Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
