Rome - Alone

I'm currently going through a divorce and have decided that I would like to do a short European break in the last week of July on my own.
Rome is my preferred choice at the moment, but would be open to any other recommendations.
I appreciate that this is a very generic question, but could anyone with experience of travelling alone offer any useful advice.
Many Thanks

Get a guide book; decide what you want to do; make plans (for example, if you want to see the Vatican and Sistine Chapel you can book on-line and so save wasting a lot of time queuing). Be aware of the risk posed by pick-pockets and so arrange adequate insurance and back-up plans in case you are unlucky. Be aware that night-life and music venues there tend to be ridiculously expensive, so plan ways to keep yourself amused rather than brooding during the long lonely hours of the night.
Personally, in your situation I would now be exploring some on-line dating sites so that I would have some friends there when I arrived, but perhaps it is too early for that. Equally, decide whether you want to learn some basic Italian (most public libraries have a collection of language learning resources): it is surprising how little English is spoken in Italy.0 -
You do right - get yourself away. It's better than moping around at home feeling sorry for yourself. I'm just not sure Rome would be my first choice for a solo weekend away but it all depends on what your interests are.
Personally, I travel all over the world on my own ('cos nobody loves me) and I've never had a problem. You get to do exactly what you want, when you want without any compromises. No matter where you go you'll always get talking to people.

I love Rome but it wouldn't be my first choice for a solo holiday after a break-up because it is quite a romantic city and you'll find yourself surrounded by couples which probably won't feel good.
My first choice in your situation would probably be Prague because English is quite common there, it's easy to get around, there's plenty to see for a long weekend and it's quite a friendly place with a nice buzz about it. If you're outdoorsy at all then in Czech in the summer you can do trips canoeing or rafting down the rivers (it's a popular holiday among locals involving rather a lot of beer drinking)...you could probably find a group to join up with for a couple of days if you'd like to do something outside the city.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
Yes, Prague is a fantastic idea. I did a 3 night weekend there in March and had a great time. Don't be put off by its stag and hen night image - most of them have moved on and those which still go there are easy to avoid. There's loads of things to see and do - plus the beer is a lot cheaper than in Rome! :beer:0

Thanks for the responses.
Rome is somewhere I have always wanted to go (granted was with the ex) so was my first thought, and there would be all the obvious tourist attractions to see.
Will definately look into prague.
It's very much a last minute decision so cost is a big factor.0 -

If cost is the biggest factor then you need to head to eastern Europe. There are some fantastic cities to discover.
According to a recent report Budapest is the cheapest place to visit: http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/holidays/article-2298760/Budapest-tops-cheapest-holiday-city-table-freezing-weather-sees-Brits-heading-abroad-Easter.html0 -
If cost is a big factor than I'd keep away from Rome - although there are plenty of things you can see and do free, decent accommodation and food is fairly expensive. Prague is much cheaper to eat/drink and accommodation is quite reasonable...transport is quick, easy and cheap so there's no need to pay over the odds to stay in the historical centre, just find somewhere close to a station. The attractions in prague are not as well known as Rome, but there's still some great stuff to see and it's definitely worth a visit.
Other places in eastern Europe are supposed to be great and good value as well but I don't have any experience of them so can't comment.Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!0 -
you are likely to get screwed over in latin countries, but more likely to get laid in E Europe :-)The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

Walking tours are a good, cheapish way to see a city, and you'll get to meet loads of other travellers.0
