Hi
My PC (working on Windows XP) won't close down or do anything at all for that fact !!
I really don't want to turn the power off and have tried task manager (no applications running but lots of processes)
The turn off window appears, but nothing happens when I click on stand by/turn off/restart.
Can anyone help....please

Just pressed the stand by button again....and it has come up with a Windows screen that has stated for the past 10 minutes "preparing to stand by"When life throws you lemons...put them in a gin and tonic !!0

Does the old control, alt ,delete routine work?
If not I guess you'll have to press and hold the power button. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

Try the shutdown option at the top of task manager. Otherwise I agree with penrhyn, hold down the power button until it turns off.
If it keeps happening report back.0 -
Have a good guess what the next suggestion will be?0

On the Fora that I frequent it would be "Get a Mac".makeyourdaddyproud wrote: »Have a good guess what the next suggestion will be?

Does "Shut Down" rather than "Standby" work?
Standby (and hibernate) always were flaky on XP. It takes just one badly written third-party driver that doesn't properly support it and things like this can happen.
Standby uses more power anyway.0 -
download procexp from MS and see what is running. BTW is an advanced Task manager and shows hidden stuff too.0

I ended up having to shut it down by the power button.
Re-started it and did a scan. Nothing showing up.
Clicked on turn off and nothing happened again !! Shut it down yet again via the power button.
It has been acting up a lot recently. It has become extremely slow and freezes up a lot.
I will try your suggestion tomorrow bluesnake....but I think I may have a dying PC on my hands !!When life throws you lemons...put them in a gin and tonic !!0
