Mother of the Bride Outfit

DD getting married next year and have started to look at outfits to get an idea of what's out there. Shocked at the price of some of them and how limited the selection is. Seems to be a stiff dress with a bolero jacket in as many colours as you want or a floaty floral dress and edge to edge jacket and neither of them would do anything for me. Too heavy for the bolero style and too young for the floaty thing. Had been thinking about getting a long dress and matching jacket. Thought about making my outfit. Have not sewn much for years but used to fairly good at it. Has anyone had any experience of this. Any advice?

My mum got a lovely outfit from Jacques Vert she waited until it went in the sale got a nice dress suit jacket and hat for the original cost of the dress £100ish I think it was. Also as a tip Debenhams offer a free personal shopper service I've used it several times and they have been fatastic at finding things in my price range that I wouldn't normally consider due to my size & chest.

Can't help you with the sewing I'm afraid as I am useless at anything like that

if you live near an outlet village or could take a day trip to one they can be quite good for MOB outfits as there is usually a good selection of clothes shops
Otherwise again if you have one near...have a look at East...they have some nice long dresses etc and I think if you sign up for their news letter you get invites to preview evenings and either 10 or 15% discount.

Tesco do Mother of the Bride wear online. Good luck! It's under occasion wear.

You could always buy something not made expressly for mother of the bride, just a really nice dress, then hat etc. to match it. This way you can get something that flatters, but still be distinguishable as mother of the bride.

The last wedding I was a guest at, the MoG wore a wide-legged long-jacket trouser suit with a pretty short sleeve lacy top under and a lovely hat. She is a retired lady, tall and not that slim, but she carries herself very well, and she looked fab.

Have you thought about trousers at all?

My Mum didn't get an officially Mother of the Bride outfit, just a lovely dress from House of Fraser then a little jacket to go with it but the dress looked great on it's own later on.

+ little fascinator and shoes and done :) don't overthink it, go with what you like and suits you, not what you think you SHOULD wear :)

What worries me about getting a dress from places like Monsoon or Coast is that someone else might be wearing the same one.

I went to a white/British wedding near Birmingham and the MotB was wearing a light blue, silky-look sari-style of trouser suit. I'd never seen anything like it, nor have I ever lived near people that wear that style of clothing - and it looked phenomenal.

That sort of attire is also, apparently, exceedingly 'cheap' to buy in comparison.

You could get one off of Amazon, or a similar site.

-Moonar, Black Butterfly, and My Evening Dress are my personal favourites, Black Butterfly in particular is good quality with a very nice selection at a very nice price.

Everything £5 is very cheap, but the stock often changes, so I check often, starting maybe a month before the event so I can order something else if nothing turns up.
