Evening guys.

Sooo I was just curious. I'm more the money conscious one in my relationship, I've sorted out a DMP to get the debt slowly paid off and I'm the one who stresses. OH seems happy to just glide along and ignore everything.

Which one are you? And how do you feel about your OH being the opposite to you?

I'm the money conscious one of the two but he's got to grips with my way of thinking really quickly. We don't buy anything on credit, if we don't have the money then we don't spend it.

In the past? I was the spender - he's very money conscious. Now? We're both money conscious and I'm finding it very difficult these days to spend any money other than the bills! I've become a right money hoarder. We can't get a savings account which I wanted to use to save up for yearly purchases like Buildings and Contents and car insurance, TV Licence etc. and I don't trust myself to manage this and the month to month spending all in one account so I literally have jars of cash under the bed! And I'm really proud of myself that I've never raided them.

Used to both be spenders, not running up loads of debt but when we lived at home we sometimes spent our money and couldn't afford petrol to get to work so had to borrow off parents etc, just being ignorant really.

Now we are the complete opposite, overpay our mortgage, save at least 75% of our net income. As someone said above, have trouble spending money now, tend to hoard it.

What makes you change from a spender to a saver?

Is it just a case of having a LBM?

    I think it is, yes.

Spending is like smoking. You can only give it up if you REALLY want to.

To begin with I just wanted to pay off the little debt that I had, but once I had got used to not spending I realised I didn't actually want/need a lot of the crap I used to buy. I don't actually feel any worse off for it.

I don't use irrational "I deserve it (irrespective of if i can afford it) logic now. Instead, I look at if I can afford it and need it, regardless of how much I feel entitled to it or that I deserve it.

My OH obviously doesn't really want to give up smoking then!

Incidentally I gave up smoking slightly after I started saving :)
  • After reading "Millionaire Next Door" I realized that I play great offence, while my GF plays great defense. Meaning, I make great money and she stops me for spending it on stuff we don't really need. Over time I have come to relish my simple non consumerism life.
