Hi
I have an android smartphone (unlocked) and would like to get a prepaid data sim (maybe 1GB for 2 weeks use) for use in spain .
On giffaff at the moment and am aware how not to use use roaming data (even have a data counter that shows roaming separately and managed not to use any... by turning data off LOL when abroad recently) .
However I do like a data connection - I feel as if my arm has been chopped off otherwise!
I also use google navigation quite a bit on my phone. Is it possible to use sat nav as " off line" as it were if I find out how to download local maps- advice welcome (aware may have to pay for maps) . It'd be easy not to have to faff with paper maps.
Thanks

There are lots of threads on this subject here. A number of people have their views and depending on circumstances their suggestions may be better than mine !
Habing said that, I bought the Carrefour SIM when I was there last.

They also do an "opt in" 1GB package.

but I just used it "as it came".
I bought my SIM in the Hypermarket near Palma Majorca airport and printed out their website with a ring round what I wanted.
They want to photocopy your passport so they know who you are but beyond that there is no formailty.
I only needed data so I went for a SIM for a dongle.
There are a few slight "prat traps" to be aware of.
1) The prices are plus VAT (except in the Canaries) so 1€ a day is actually 1.19€ (or it may be more I think VAT is going or has gone up there).
2) The SIM had a PIN lock which is on the carrier switched on as supplied.
3) My Android phone looses its home screen layout for some reason if you can't get a data connection first thing after changing the SIM. Anoying rather than a big issue.
4) Take the required APN settings with you on a piece of paper.

It is possible to pre-cache google maps for use with navigation but not available on Spain maps it seems. Download something like Navfree over wifi before you go which has free Spain maps (198.8 mb).0

Just had another thought.
As a backup, take a Vodafone PAYG SIM with £10 on it with you.
They do 25MB of data a day for £2 in Spain. Beyond 25MB it gets very expensive but I've used that for Google maps on my unlocked Android phone.0
