A few weeks ago I had major toothache - knocked a filling out, and desperately needed a "quick fix" pain relief. In the absence of seeing my dentist anytime soon - it was 5pm Thursday, the day before a Bank Holiday weekend :(, this called for drastic action.

I decided a cocktail of painkillers & vodka mouthwash was the way to go. And, to be fair, it was. :T

Only problem is, I had to buy a 75cl bottle of vodka, as that was all the local shop sold, and I now have most of the bottle left, and feel the need to 'justify' it. :o

I could ill afford to spend £15 on a bottle of vodka, but at the time, the pain I was in warranted it. :)

I don't drink vodka, and hope not to need "vodka mouthwash" anytime soon, so I'm wondering if I can put it to good use somehow?

Any suggestions would be great. :)

Some idea on here although not sure how useful some them will be, do we even have poison ivy in this country?

  • Flavoured vodkas as gifts? If you can find small bottles you could make several gifts of vanilla vodka, skittles vodka, humbug vodka, raspberry vodka...

Strong vanilla vodka works well as extract for baking- just put a few pods straight into the bottle and shake when you remember.

  • i made a gorgeous tomatoey creamy pasta sauce with vodka in a few months ago, cant remember the exact recipe but im sure if you google it you'll find similar recipes, the vodka gives it an almost chilli like peppery kick - yum!

Have also heard that its really good to use as a hair rinse for shiny hair, but not tried it myself, seems a bit of a waste to me ;)

Won't use up much, but it does work to clean spectacles which have gotten greasy - wipe with a bit of vodka on cotton wool, then polish with a suitable cloth.

Otherwise, I agree with the flavoured vodka idea. We are heading towards free fruit season, if you can hang onto the bottle for a few months until you can either go foraging (so you won't have to spend any more on it) or buy fruit from a pick your own farm.
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

Vodka jelly - yum! Make it, put it in shot glasses and consume when ready! If you want you could use the jelly mixed with vodka in a trifle base as an alternative to sherry.

Here's a 'recipe' but basically use some vodka in the mix and leave out some water - whatever strength suits!

if you have pets then it makes a great 'pet accident odour neutraliser' Though personally, it would make me weep to have to pour good voddy on the carpet!
as others have said - flavoured vodka is great for little pressies!
if its kept capped tightly a good vodka doesnt 'go off' so can be offerred to guests for a good few years!

I'll be trying out the vodka tomato sauce, sounds fab, thanks.

I have to say it was breaking my friend's heart knowing that I was spitting vodka straight down the sink. Sacrilege. :D

  • my mum says to clean jewellery with it. Or better still keep it for cocktails. One day you will be desperate enough to drink it and it really doesnt go off.
