Tibiotalocalcaneal fusion

Options
I have undergone tibiotalocalcaneal fusion in my left ankle on February 21st, following a serious RTA 26 months ago.
I am led to believe that my ankle flexibility will be severely reduced and, as well as leg length discrepancy, I will have to wear some kind of rocker bottom sole shoes.
Does anyone have any experience, direct or indirect, on this type of condition?

You may want to look at the ankle fusion group on yahoo groups which is a good source of information.

I've just had a fusion on 28th Feb following 8 other surgeries!

I guess we will be sharing experiences between each other.

Well went back to work two weeks ago using a knee scooter which has been a life saver.

Broke in a couple of pairs of rocker sole shoes which were reduced before surgery as I already had severe problems which I presume you had as well. Clarks, sketchers do cheapest, mbt and rynn are much more expensive. Wait until cast is off before buying because you will also need room in shoe for aircast ankle brace which youll wear for a while.

Personally pain has been better than pre op so am expecting better mobility at the end as have been in wheelchair/crutches for most of te past few years.

You tube has videos of people walking post fusion and look very good.discrepancies in leg length etc can be sorted out with a sach foot insert or other orthotic.

Yes you wont be able to jump and probably not run, but after the long recovery walking should be more comfortable.

I have a bad RTA 27 months ago, whereas a van run over my body following a fall off a motorbike on a dual carriageway. I suffered 10 fractures from the pelvis down, including a shattered left talus. Eventually the talus collapsed, hence the fusion, and the pain was off the chart. I was on 4 separate painkillers, several times a day, including morphine. Today I am having the cast removed, and I am excited on the outcome, and apprehensive about whether pain will be my companion again or not.
How did you measure the leg length discrepancy following your fusion?

The surgeon/physio measures length discrepancy but as you've been non weight bearing for six weeks it won't be accurate.

Hopefully today after your x rays you are in an aircast or cam walker and partial weight bearing.

The trick is still elevate your leg as much as possible , it is going to be sore when you put weight on it,particularly as everything will have tightened up, on top of the healing from surgery.

Leg length discrepancy can be allowed for with orthotics (inserts in shoes) and when you start physio you will be assessed for this.

Some cobblers will put rocker soles on existing footwear which may make a more cost effective option for footwear.

Well, my surgeon seemed happy with the x-ray. It sure is a hell of a rod they stuck up my tibia. I am now in a walking boot, and surgeon told me I can sensibly bear full weight. I can stand easily, but walking is a little trickier. I will take my time though, so that I will not do any further damage. At least i have a little more freedom, and I can now drive. I think we can be of real help to one another.
As leg length discrepancy goes, the surgeon does not think that the difference will be that much, especially considering I originally lost 3/4 of an inch in my right femur.
But life goes on, and no matter how many times I get knocked down, I will get up again.

Right leg so won't be driving for another two months at least and taxis aren't tax deductable. It's a shame that people abuse the blue badge system so much we dont have temporary permits like in other countries as I have been in wheelchair/crutches on and off for several years and its frustrating when shopmobility places etc only have disabled parking so I can't access easily.

3/4 inch is not so bad I was just about an inch different before surgery and orthotics compensated.

When walking in boot make sure other shoe has nice chunky sole to bring you up to right height. Also only wear one shoe as much as possible as it will be wrecked and unevenly worn so you only have to throw one pair away at end.

Actually started work on friday, with air boot and walking stick.
Feeling a little stiff after day one, and sure to feel even stiffer after day 2, so take day 3 off, and go back on day 4 refreshed.
Basically build up strength and stamina and things will happen.

It's the end of week 2 and the improvements are happening. I feel full of energy, spent yesterday without a walking aid too. Today, though, my right achille's tendon (my fit foot) is really sore. I have just started driving a new car as well, and maybe the change of driving posture has affected my achille's, but it's very sore.

Has anyone out there ever suffered a serious ankle injury and used one of these: http://www.healthandcare.co.uk/ankle-supports-braces/aircast-a60-ankle-support.html?gclid=CO7vx9HuubACFSYhtAodInUL8w
