I live in a normal area so connection to any of the big companies is not a problem

Nothing is normal, broadband is exchange specific. Check for LLU with SamknowsThat gum you like is coming back in style.0

"Standalone" broadband is via 3G or cable, or, if you can get it, WiFi.
For an ADSL based connection you have to have a phone line so you have to pay line rental. There is no such thing as "standalone ADSL" (called Naked DSL) in the UK.
For unlimited data transfer you're basically limited to Sky LLU (specifically), BE (also LLU) and cable, unless you have access to BT Infinity.
The first two are at present unthrottled, the latter are both traffic managed.
Are you sure you need unlimited? As that hugely restricts your choices, and most providers still retain the right to a "Fair Usage Policy" so they can kick you off the network or limit you anyway if you go overboard with your usage.0 -
Yes, you need an active phone line to get ADSL broadband-how do you expect to receive the signal without one?
You do not have to take your line rental from your ISP.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Some countries have the facility to do broandband without an active phone service - previous poster mentioned it 'naked dsl' aka 'dry loop dsl'

But its sadly not available in the UK0
