Question of the week. Can I wear my diving equipment on the plane?

Q. I'm a diver and I would like to beat budget airline baggage charges by wearing my underwater buoyancy control device (BCD) on the plane. It weighs 10kg dry. Would it count as hand luggage? Steve, by email.
Martin's A: Hilarious! This I presume is on the back of my budget airline jacket with a poacher's pocket so you can stuff 10kg of socks, books and more in it, to supplement hand luggage and forgo the need to pay for a case.
In your case there's no technical reason it shouldn't work, though I'd worry about taking those metal lumps through security. Yet it's a very obvious breach and you may be pushing the airlines a bit too far - they can always ask you to take it off and weigh it. So it's a case of let the flyer beware I'm afraid.

I weigh 55kg and was allowed 20kg luggage. My case weighed 25kg and I was told to take something out or pay extra. The guy in the queue in front of me was allowed through. He must have weighed 80kg and had a 20kg suitcase. When I complained that his total weight was far more than mine, the lady on the check-in desk said that passenger weight was calculated on an average basis and luggage weight was calculated at 20kg per person + known excess baggage weight.
So, I reckon that if everyone on the plane stuffed 10kg into their pockets, the plane would be 3000kg heavier than expected and would run out of fuel 5km short of the runway! Is Martin is trying to kill us?:rotfl:
If people insist on cramming all their luggage into their pockets, will airlines start weighing people and luggage? Does this mean airlines will end up placing a 'tax' on overweight people?ss0 -
Why not wear your wetsuit as well? Just say your scared of crashing into the sea :rotfl:
Given that most BCDs dont look to dissimilar to a quilet but with a hose attached what could they say? Sling it over you arm at checkin, put it in the tray like a coat at security and either put it on or carry it over your arm when you board the plane. Remember you are entitled to an overcoat as will as your hand luggage even on Ryanair/Easyjet.
The other option would be to put in inside your jacket and carry it casually over your shoulder.
Even Ryanair could not argue that its a 'second bag'.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
