cash refund when paid by card? (maplin)

Options
hi all am hoping you can help me whilst on holiday down south we bought an inverter from maplin to use with hair straighteners, sales assistant told us that we could return if they did not work.
they did not work at all and we sealed it up to return however we brought them back to scotland and now today tried to return and they would not as my friend had paid by card at the time.
the sale was 22nd july in shrewsbury and i have since given my friend the cash back and she says the funds have left her account to maplin, so where do we stand with rights to refund as he refused to give cash to me for them and i left the store a bit humiliated.
it really did not help that i had phoned the store ahead of going and when i explained the sales assistant had said it would be fine as long as i had receipt then denied he had said that when i got there to his manager.
do we have a leg to stand on? was £30 any replies appreciated.

You need to get it refunded onto the same card that was used to buy them

It's illegal to give a cash refund from a card transaction under anti-money laundering laws, I believe.

    You believe correctly :D

I don't think that will get you a cash refund either. They will only refund the money onto the card.

I would assume that the friend in Shrewsbury is the cardholder and can therefore get the refund returned to the card.
"Part P" is not, and has never been, an accredited electrical qualification. It is a Building Regulation. No one can be "Part P qualified."
