Infant meals on BA

I was after people's experiences with BA. We will be travelling when my little one is 18 months and will be on proper food, so I don't think she'll be satisfied with a jar. I have requested a child meal, but have been told that this is not guaranteed. I haven't bought her a seat, and don't intend to (as she should be ok in the Britax seat still).

Has anyone managed to get 'real' food for their little one?

Thanks

Will you have that on your lap?

Be friendly with the cabin crew they may find something in the galley.

No its the BA bassinet which goes in the bulkhead! Now that would be extreme moneysaving!!!!

Have you picked and booked your seat then?

  • Yes - have got the bassinet seats both ways.
  • As far as I am aware, if you pay for a seat, you get a meal. Otherwise, no. Not even baby food in a jar. From BA's website, which you might have seen already:

"We offer on board bottle warming and baby-food warming facilities (only un-opened food in a sealed jar) on our longhaul flights.
    • We do not carry infant meals or baby milk on board so we recommend that you carry your own baby food and equipment (liquids and sufficient supplies of sterilised bottles) in your cabin baggage.
    • We are not able to sterilise bottles or provide sterilised water."
I've not asked for baby food when we travelled as we mostly took night flights - the children tend to sleep through the flight, thank goodness.

If you're concerned that your child might go hungry, pack some food of your own or buy at the airport. I wouldn't expect the airline to cough up a meal for your non-paying child. Even if you were lucky enough to get a kind stewardess, you might have to wait for all passengers to be served before they can see if there're any meals left.

Thanks I had seen this but I'm not convinced its correct

Surely this isn't possible with the liquid restrictions???

OK outbound, but maybe not on the return from a foreign airport and 9am flight?

We have paid £400 for our non-paying child!!!!

It is correct. Bottom line is no seat = no food. Liquid restrictions allow you to take on board sufficent liquids for your baby for the journey. Security may require you to taste the food at the airport.

but then it wouldn't be in an unopened sealed jar?

You could buy an ambient temp toddler meal in UK to take on return flight. If you buy food at the airport, the crew will usually put it in a fridge for you. You might be able to get a big breakfast at airport before you board flight if its a 9am flight. Past experience suggests foreign airports are good for eating in, but do not have the equivalent of our Boots for buying food for the flight. You could maybe contact the airport itself or check out their website to see if there is anywhere to buy a takeaway sandwich? Which airport are you returning from? Btw, we flew with our daughter a couple of weeks before her 2nd birthday so know exactly your dilema, and the bassinet seats are just about still ok for them, just make sure you check in early enough to get one.

Are you planning on taking a britax car seat and hoping to fit it into the bassinet?

I thought that you could only take car seats on board if you had paid for a seat and the bassinets were meant for the babies on their own.

As for security requiring you to taste food, this is to prevent a terrorist disguising explosives as baby food. I agree, if security require you to taste the food it will no longer be sealed. If you then want the air stewardesses to heat it you will have to explain that security required you to open it and hope they understand.

Its tough flying with little ones, seat or no seat!
