Would it dramatically change the efficiency of a radiator is a sofa is backed up against it?

Yes. You'd be heating the sofa not the air in the room.0

Yes, when we first moved into our house, we had a sofa in front of the living room radiator. Room never seemd to heat up very well. Before last winter, we moved the furniture about, so that there was nothing against the radiator, and it made a huge difference to the heat in the room0
