ski jackets - really necessary for skiing?

Hi, I will be going on a ski trip in Bulgaria next month and am just listing things I need to buy.


One of them is a ski jacket. Having looked online they seem quite pricey.


It'll be my first time skiing so I'm reluctant to spend a lot as it's no guarantee I'll go ever again.


So I'm wondering whether I can just wear my usual winter jacket? (a down one from superdry).

    In a word yes. Sports Direct have some good ones branded No Fear that are cheap.

    Search around for cheap ones, ex hire are ok too.

    I had mine from TK Maxx - didn't pay a huge amount and it was fine. Might be the wrong time but Aldi have also had ski wear/cold weather stuff in if there's any left.

    Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    Likewise. Ski socks are really important too. Don't skimp on those.

    Thanks guys. Didn't think of sports direct and tk maxx - there I was looking at Mountain Warehouse and Tresspass (no wonder they were expensive). I just remembered Decathlon too.


    Yes and socks - are they the same things advertised as 'ski tubes'?

    I bought mine from TK Maxx for £50, I don't ski any more but it's excellent in wintry weather. You need a jacket that is both warm and waterproof, and made of a material that is resistant to abrasion and cuts (as you'll be spending a lot of time falling over).

    I wear my light weight waterproof when skiing, anything else is far too warm when being active and a waste of money considering how often it would be used.

    Jacket, socks and gloves are essential items but as mentioned look at TKMax in particular, I got a Spider top there a few weeks back.

    I was in the same position as you last year. At 47 my first weeks skiing. Bought a ski jacket from TK Maxx online for £58 the rrp was "supposed" to be £225. Jacket is fine for a winter coat and going skiing again this year

    Yes ski tubes are the same thing but think of getting a few pairs of fitted socks , ones with proper toes and heels with no seams and not to thick.
    It's so important to be able to feel the ski .

    [FONT=&quot]If you are looking to keep costs under control I wouldn’t bother buying specialist thermal base layers etc – use any long sleeve T shirts and leggings /longjohns you already have. Go for layers rather than single thick items.[/FONT]
    [FONT=&quot]In March, conditions may be wet at times, so make sure your gear is waterproof. [/FONT]
    [FONT=&quot]Borrow things if you can – ski pants and jackets especially.[/FONT]
    [FONT=&quot]But buy good, warm, waterproof gloves that are a comfortable fit, well fitting ski socks, and some basic goggles. [/FONT]
    [FONT=&quot]Also put uv protecting sun glasses, sunscreen, and lipbalm on your list. (All of these can be painfully expensive in some resorts.)[/FONT]
