Good idea to consider all options and sleep on it - very mature :D
I often wonder if we have some neon signs above our heads invisible to us inviting the world to come and have a go !
Thanks for the Elaine update . I found she kept me on track it used to seem wrong not to do as she did . I would have liked to see bigger sons finished bedroom and miss all her challenges . I was signed up but couldn't access after the new blog . Hey ho at least there is still all the old stuff online .
    Take care

    I'm so tired now!
Loo back in. Sink back in.
Extractor fan from bathrooms' isolator switch moved.
    Damp proof work done.

Extractor in kitchen still not installed
Ceiling in kitchen still not plastered
Kitchen light in kitchen still not replaced.
Measurements for replacement windows still not happened.

Looks like even more time off eventually.

Sorry to say, Mooloo, but you sound a bit intimidated by your seamstress. You just have to tell her it isn't working out and after her ultimatum you have decided to not keep her on. End of. She's casual, not permanent. All zero hours contract stuff. No such this as two weeks paid notice. You may have to go through two or three seamstresses before you find one that suits.

As to the customers, maybe they have to put up with e.g. a three day turn around instead of two for a while, while you find someone else.

As the boss, I have a few rules for myself. First is I refuse to work with anyone who is making me and/or other people working here miserable. I hate people bringing their negative energy into my space. Put it this way, they only get the chance to do that once. Secondly, I need a job done, not someone to chat on to.

I used to do everything to keep the peace. No longer. You live and learn, but just imho, employees who want to be treated like they are indispensable are way too high maintenance to have around. Especially when they are throwing their weight around making your other staff miserable.

Do you still have the list of the people who originally applied for the work? Would any of them be suitable or is she the only one?

I did like the idea of doing the interesting stuff and outsourcing other stuff out to someone. Would that person that you know come to the shop to do the work? As long as you make your share of the profit, it seems like a good idea.

Exactly. If it doesn't please you to have your seamstress around (sorry, but she sounds so difficult), maybe it is time to let her go?

I'm off to sleep on it. But as I go to sleep I think that it's time to say go. She is highly skilled, but all I am doing is loosing touch with my own skills as I gave her the specialist label, and seemed to loose touch with the fact that 20 odd years ago, I was doing her work for someone else.
Yes she is "trained" but I am time served too.
Doing that dress yesterday, with the panel inserts etc tells me I should believe in myself. Also if I am doing a fitting that if I feel the job is too much for me I can say no.
I do know that as I am only just starting to pay myself back and it's not quit a wage yet, that I could stop her hours and take the work back on myself. If I organise myself properly. My guess is that I will probably be telling her that I can't be dictated too, and that if she can't work with staff then I will accept her verbal offer of resignation she offered today.
Also I am in a position where I can just say no to a job I don't think I can do, while I look for a replacement. As my brother said last year I can cherry pick what I do and don't do.
Talking to him tonight, he just made a valid point. I have a skill, that I could move to Portugal and rent and still work. I don't have to wait till I have saved enough etc. We gave freedom of movement etc in the EU.
I may look into it for sooner rather than later.
    Let's sleep on it.

surely from a business point of view it would make more sense to pay someone less experienced than yourself to do the more routine jobs while you take on the more complex ones.
As this would make you more profit than paying a higher wage to a more skilled person to do the complex jobs if you can can do them yourself?

Ooh, I love a bit of thinking outside the box!

I am also pleased to see that you realise the tail does not wag the dog when it comes to staff.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once

This morning I am just waiting for a fitting that's booked in, before going upstairs to get to work on the curtains I started.
I'm rather tired and feel quite jaded today.

    Edit.
The ladies came for the fitting. As I feared the dress doesn't look right, and I'm going to have to redo it all myself.
So this has not helped me in favouring the stay campaign for the seamstress.
Yesterday a jacket had to be returned as the sleeve had been stitched in twisted.
This compounds that it's really time to part the waves.
