Rent (and general) advice needed....The camels back has now snapped.

Evening All,

This is my first post, It’s going to be a long one, so grab yourself a cuppa and make yourself comfortable.

I have been a reader of the forums and posts for a while, and I have read some brilliant posts and responses, hints and tips. For me, it's now time to stop lurking in the shadows of the sidelines, dig my head out of the sand and pick my next in line number…. (cashier number 1 please).

Today I am at breaking point. For the first time in my life I just want to quit everything and head for the hills, debts are making me so I’ll to the point that I couldn’t tell you the last night I slept, and I have ran out of all possible options, there is no corner to seek refuge, there is no light whatsoever at the end of the tunnel, in fact what lies in front of me is a massive stone wall. I don’t mean to sound so negative, but at the moment I have ran out of all positivity.

First off on the list of woes this evening: I’ve screwed up my budget this month big time, as I had gone into an unarranged overdraft last month and stupidly didn’t realise, so when my wages went into my bank account at the end of March, half of it automatically disappeared back into this unauthorised overdraft. I thought there was more money in my account than what there was, but when I went to take money out my bank on the 1st of April for my rent, there was no money there. (Never in my whole life have I not paid my rent – I am so angry and upset over this) My lovely landlord (whom I flat share with) has given me an extension to the 20th of the month, but I am really struggling to come up with the money by then, £400 to find in 13 days is mission impossible. I don’t know what to do or where to turn. I had to borrow £100 from family for my train season ticket to get to and from work for the rest of the month. No rent & no groceries in the house at all. My credit rating is that shot to pieces that not even payday loans will touch me. (Sadly it’s partly because of them I am in this whole debt mess in the first place – not their fault I guess, just my naivety towards money and thinking that I can handle it when I clearly can’t). I just have no idea what to do here..

Secondly - I went to try and sell on Ebay to try and raise a bit of cash to put towards the £350, but when I logged in they have suspended my account for owing £10.50!!! I tried to chat to them to ask if they could remove the suspension of my account until the 25th of April when I next get paid, so that I could sell some items of clothing/books/dvds to help pay bills, but they weren’t for working with me at all…. They said that even when the account was paid off, there would be a delay in funds being available in PayPal up to 21 days…. Great!!!

Thirdly - on my way home from work this evening I cracked, I was trying to make a call, when it was forwarded to the customer service, they have cut off all outgoing calls and texts because my bill wasn’t paid…. Smashing!!... So the tears flowed freely… To the old lady that gave me her packet of tissues, thank you… If I ever see you again I will buy you a cuppa tea and a cake for being so lovely to me.

I am at my wits end with absolutely no where to turn. I have never been good at asking for help, rather just struggle on, but I am trying to face up to everything, and start dealing with this mountain of debt, but keep getting hit with massive obstacles. I’ve ran out of steam to fight with them now, this isn’t like me in the slightest, I never give up, but today I just want to quit… I don’t want to play any more :(

I have set aside tomorrow as my finance day, to calculate all my debts, contact each bill provider and get an up to date balance, I don’t think there is any point in putting together a SOA, as everything is all over the place, but I’ll give it a bash and try my best, and try and come to terms with the fact that I need help sorting this shambles out.

I have read about trust deeds in Scotland, but I’m not clued up on this at all. Can someone maybe give me a bit of advice or point me in the right direction on the difference between debt management plans and trust deeds, and who is a good company to go with.

I am considering taking up a second job, but where I’m going to get the time I have no idea, as I am also studying two degrees from home at the moment, so may just have to be paid surveys etc. I have started on surveys, but I understand that the money will take a while to build up and pay out, I have also got the PPI Claim forms from MSE website, i'm not sure if I have any PPI …. It’s a start if nothing else!

I truly thank you all for taking the time to read my long winded post, if you have any advice or words of wisdom to offer then I would be ever so grateful for that.

For the first time in my life I am ‘standing up’ to my debt issue and addressing the problem… No more head in sand!!

If ever I needed luck on my side or a miracle then now would really be the perfect time for it to turn up… Failing that, I could murder a slice of cake and a hot chocolate :(

Thanks a Million.
Don.

There are few problems in life that don't have a solution, and you sound like a resourceful person.
Tonight, try to eat, drink enough and get some sleep.
Tomorrow you can sit down, and look at your financial situation afresh, find out how much you need/owe etc.
And I am sure that the lovely (and some of the less lovely but very practical ;) ) people on here will advise you.

    Hi,

    Thank you for your reply.

I think my total debt mountain stands around £15,000. I will have a definate answer tomorrow when I work everything out and contact each provider for an up to date balance.

I earn £14,040 a year after tax and national insurance contributions.

I am studying two distance learn degrees as both are sciences as both of them go hand in hand and need them to progress further, better job oportunities. I started them before I openened my eyes to my debt mess, so far I have managed well with them, everything has been handed in on time and the marks are good.

    Thanks

    Hi,

    Thank you for your reply.

I am normally a fairly resourceful person, I have just let everything get so out of hand and into a spaghetti like mess, that i'm not entirely sure where the start is. I have composed a to-do list to work through tomorrow. I don't expect this to be smooth sailing, but I am willing to give it the best shot that I possibly can.

I am grateful for both lovely people and practical people both for their help.

    Thanks
    Don.

    Hello,
I'm really sorry to hear about your shi**y day. If I wasn't in a similar situation myself I'd order a pizza for you to collect at your local pizzaplace for you to sob into.

I'm not very good at all of this yet, but when people post in similar situations the first thing the clever people on here ask for is an SOA, which means 'statement of affairs'. You fill this form in here: http://www.stoozing.com/calculator/soa.php as completely and as accurately as you can (remember to include 1/12 of any annual expenses)

Then post it on here, and you'll probably get some helpful pointers

    All the best

Made a small start, now it's time to really tackle this debt!

    Hi Don

Sounds like there are not going to be any easy options, and no one solution but hopefully there will be some way through this.

When are you next paid? (compared to when you need to pay the rent).

In terms of ebay do you know anyone who could sell some items on your behalf (perhaps your landlord/flatmate has an account and would they be willing to sell things for you if it would help raise money to pay them the rent)?

Is it likely that your employer may be willing to give you a small wage advance (obviously that is on a short term help but its something to explore - and by next month you can perhaps be more prepared for things).

A trust deed is more formal than a DMP, but less severe than bankruptcy. This might be a useful starting point https://www.nationaldebtline.org/S/factsheets/Pages/21%20SCOT%20Trust%20deeds/Default.aspx and it might be worth calling national debtline tomorrow for some advice on a trust deed and other options (given the problem with your phone they may be able to ring you back if you can make a quick call to them on a public phone or email them)

Ha, yeah. I've done my sobbing for today, it just all got to much and I had a wee breakdown. We are only human at the end of the day :o

Thank you so much for the SOA link, I was looking around for one and coudn't find it, I will add that to my to do list for the morning, get it filled in and put down everything as it stands.

Every step in the right direction is a step closer to the goal posts!

    Hi Tixy,

I get next paid hopefully on the 25th (its just changed to the last friday of each month) - but if i take the two months rent out of one wage i'm back to the start again. :( It's like a rat race on a merry-go-round.

I have an outstanding advance of £285.00 from my wages already from a few months back, and hoping that i can part pay that back on pay day.

Ah I never thought to ask someone else about Ebay, some of my close friends have Ebay accounts, I will ask if they could sell some of my items for me. Won't add up to much but its a starting point, few books, dvds, tops and trousers that are too big with tags still on.

The National Debt Line sounds like a good starting place for me. I have taken note of this, and will call them tomorrow and ask them what they advice with regards to a DMP or trustdeed.

    Thank you, great help.

I'm still unsure of all the ins and outs of debt management plans and trustdeeds, I want to find the best plan for me. I have heard of StepChange, I will have a look at their website also. I think the more information I have on both subjects, the better idea I will have of what to do.

I know my credit score will probably be in the lowest category, but at some point in the future (10+ years away) I would like to settle down and think about buying a property, can a credit score be mended, once its been damaged so heavily (sorry if this is a daft question but I'm trying to get my head round all this)

    Thanks
    Don.
