Switching supplier with a pre-payment meter

At present I have a pre-payment meter, wish to switch supplier, however at present I have abut £40 for both Gas and Electic on the meter, would I lose the reminder with a new supplier? If so, I guess best to wait until it's low and top up small amounts if needed?
