Christmas Markets: which do you rate?

Hi all

We've just been talking in the office about which Christmas markets we've visited and like. MSE Jessica's thinking of going to one but doesn't want to spend time and money going to one that's not that great.

Are there any you'd recommend?

Belfast has a good one if you are willing to travel over for it. Failing that then UK mainland Bath has a good one that I went to previously (http://www.bathchristmasmarket.co.uk/ )

Manchester's is big and cheerful as a place to meet & socialise - no idea what the shopping side is like as I can't afford their stuff. Good public transport, but try to time the bag & box shuffling to out of commute time?

    Thanks for those!

Has anyone been to the Birmingham one?

Manchester is a nightmare. Too many people, crammed in alongside shoppers in the stores alongside, as well as those who work in manchester. Its way overpriced, the only thing I ever buy from there is Stroopwaffel. Haven't been for four years because of the overcrowding and the horrible rude people who go there. The only time it is bearable is around 9pm when most of the stalls are closing or closed.

I'd rather visit one in Europe.

I'm going to the Birmingham one on the first weekend of December. Apparently it's the largest German market outside of Germany and Austria so I'm looking forward to it.

The Birmingham Market is big, I think alot of the stuff is very expensive but it is very sociable with people meeting to drink German beer and eat German food. The hot chocolate is delicious.

    Christmas markets in the UK:

    Rochester Dickensian Christmas market

It was a lovely, magical experience. Be aware that you need to pay the Dartford crossing charge in advance.

Manchester Christmas market - is very good, well spaced out (separate areas) stalls.

Lincoln Christmas market - is good but very crowded. The last time I visited, it felt quite uncomfortable because (of the one way system) you are forced to keep moving when perhaps you want to go at your own pace.

Birmingham Christmas market - is okay.............but not very big.

The Christmas markets are listed in descending order, purely my experience and views of course.

    Christmas markets outside the UK:

    Nuremberg Christmas market

We were lucky that when we visited it was snowing and everything was looking picture perfect. They have beautiful stalls, fabulous food and drink and sleigh rides. The architecture is stunning and it was a winter wonderland magical experience.

    Cologne Christmas market

There are several markets across Cologne and an outdoor ice rink. They even have a market on a floating cruise ship.

I can't imagine how big those markets are if you thought Birmingham's wasn't very big. It is the whole city centre, the whole of New St Chamberlain Square etc.

Just been told it was smaller last year and will be again this year due to building work. It is a few years since I went and it was big then. I think it was nearly 200 stalls.

I went a few years ago...probably 4. didn't think much of it. Stalls were very similar selling cheap sweets, wooden toys etc. Not sure what I expected but it didn't live up to my expectations.
