A Budgeteer's Adventure

Hello all

I've been writing my mortgage free wannabe plans down in a book for a while now but decided to join this forum to help my focus a bit more and hopefully benefit from being cheered on :j and being told off :naughty: when i need to be ;) - plus my handwriting isn't that neat :rotfl:

A bit about me - there's just me on this mortgage free journey - although my boyfriend lives with me and would love for us to be mortgage free - there's no getting him on board and i've given up trying to be honest - i've tried for years. Although he's now good at looking at bargains a bit more. We have our 3 cats who live with us too :smileyhea
The mortgage - fortunately, I managed to remortgage earlier this year which saw a massive reduction in interest :T:T However, for affordability, i had to extend the term to 25 years. But i see this as being irrelevant, i've overpaid each month since remortgaging and plan on paying off the mortgage way before the new 25 year term.

Ideally, i'd like to pay off the balance and have some savings at the end of my 5 year fix. i deliberately took a 5 year fix as I was looking for a new job, which i got, but as it's a different industry to what I was working in before i've had a bit of a paycut - which I expected hence the 5 year fix

I've probably wittered on enough now - here's a cuppa :coffee:and biscuits for all :)

I have a few things I'm focusing on at the moment - although they're ticking along:
1, the mortgage - i'm overpaying a set amount each month and when i reach the 10% cap for overpayments I'll be putting the money into savings
2, debt - i put a good chunk of the mortgage onto 0% credit cards so i'm also trying to clear these - paying a set amount each month plus any extra i make from bay of e, bank account switches, cashback etc. after doing this my car broke down for the millionth time and was uneconomical to repair - so i bought a new to me car on a 0% card and am paying for this too. It was a good decision though as i need a reliable car for my new job.
3, Oh i do have some savings - 4 months worth of my income - which is just over 6 months worth of outgoings which includes payments into the regular savers that i have as well.

My next main focus - the one i need cheering on for and maybe a bit of straight talking for is the food shopping bill - it is too high and needs to be reduced :o - its a definite area i can make savings on - so starting today i'll log on here all my spends and possibly meal plans too. My problem is, i have a freezer full but i can't resist bargains - 30p M&$ meal for 2 anyone :o

The freezer also needs emptying and less in it to make it easier to use and not a tetris advanced level game each time i get back from shopping

I've started on this the last couple of days and lifted some bargain meats out to make meals with - made a delicious stew yesterday and am making a broth today :D tomorrow i'm doing a roast om nom nom

i can't reduce the cat food bill - they're all quite fussy eaters or, as i say, they won't eat something they don't like - and as they're rescue cats i like to feed them food they like and will eat - i don't eat things i don't like so i think this is fair

I'm not counting today's food spend - ingredients i was missing for the broth as my fella's picking them up for me :A - i offered him the money but he refused.

Once the food spends under control i'm hoping to focus on bringing in more money for the shortfall at the end of the 5 years - but 1 thing at once

Thanks lippy - yes i've lurked on alot of threads and i've learnt loads from here. That's a good idea with the signature - i'll have a think what i can put in it. As i'm capped on what i can overpay to the mortgage i see that as the regular mortgage payment each month.. will ponder..

Thanks to Lippy i've identified my first target which is to clear my smallest 0% card and then to close this - i've just paid January's payment early £100, to bring the balance to £500 not sure how much more i'll manage to this next month.

I've also completed my monthly review of all my finances so I know where i am up to :) - i know there's no extra money to be found to pay today.

I've planned some recipes i can use the leftovers from tomorrows roast for - i'm happy as i've made sure i use up the bits of languishing veg too :T Some hearty, healthy meals on the way :D

i'm trying to inspire myself to do some more kondoing too but have not long since finished the first lot of kondoing of the whole house so it might be a bit too soon to start again - would realy love to find some things to list for sale though

Have a great new year all xx

Yesterday was a NSD and today should be as well :D

I'm cooking a few things today - using up some bits of leftover veg as well as prepping for tomorrows tea which will use up some leftovers from today ;) Whilst cooking I've been making note of the staples I've used up in recipes - so a bit of a bigger food spend than i'd hoped for due this week but all stuff that's long lasting and I use regularly.

I'm going to list an item on the bay of e today as well - that'll be an item gone and money in hopefully if it sells.

Trying to think if there's anything else I can do to get some extra funds in to pay off credit card - I've already switched energy supplier via cashback and am awaiting this being payable, listed everything i'm getting rid of but the 1 item i'm listing today on the bay of e, done a bank account switch hopefully that should pay out in January, I need to do my tax return for MS which should generate a small rebate, i'm also owed money from my old energy supplier so i'll need to ring for that when they're open.. and am owed £8 from college but they're not open until the new year, I need to put in a claim with post office for a non delivered item as well but need to buy ink first. But I was expecting these few bits of money and am pretty stuck for new ideas... probably why I was thinking of kondoing again... All xmas gifts were gratefully consumable or useful - the cash I got I've already overpaid to the mortgage :T

Oh well - will keep trying to think of ways to raise some extra cash - i'm certainly doing well with stretching our food as far as possible and have prepped my packed lunches for the first 2 weeks back in work and these are already in the freezer :T Pleased with this - in my last job there wasn't a microwave or fridge so inevitably i'd end up spending on something hot during the cold miserable days so I won't be spending that in my new job now :D

As this is a MFW diary and I've read a few others I thought I should share a bit more about overpayments - i'm capped at 10% a year and I've set myself to overpay £800 a month - more than double my monthly mortgage payment - as soon as I hit the 10% cap the £800 will be paid into savings:D This makes sense to me - the cards I have are 0% but i'm working on clearing these as well - I managed to reduce my card debt by over £1200 in December :T:T A great result due to bay of e sales, cashback being paid and being paid money I was owed as well as regular payments - the majority was from money I was owed so difficult to replicate each month - just wanted to give everyone a fuller picture x

    Hello All

i can't wait for tomorrow when my mortgage payment will go out - it's usually on the 1st - & i'll be able to see my new balance and the interest that was added

I've a few things i'd like to do today - a bit of work in preparation for tomorrow, a bit of reading - on here and the book i'm currently reading :D and to list another identified item on the bay of e - i listed the 1 item i'd identified yesterday as posting on here made me accountable :rotfl: and the new recipe i'm going to try. I've loved having the time to focus on food this holiday and try new recipes with leftovers to make our food go further ;) I tend to cook alot anyway and try not to waste anything but sometimes when i'm getting in at 9pm i just don't have the energy.

Oh, in good news, i bought a dress off the bay for work and it fits :T - i wasn't sure it would. - the dress code in my job now is much more formal than where i used to work and i've had to spend money on a new work wardrobe - essential i think - i want to be comfortable, create the right impression and a bit of me would like to fit in with my new colleagues too. I also think kondoing has had a part to play as i've bought cheaply but not kept things that'll 'do'. this is how i kinda want to fit in with colleagues as they do look the professional part. My work clothes now spark joy in the sense that i can easily choose my outfit for work, feeling comfortable also helps with my confidence and i enjoy having a definite split in my wardrobe between work and home clothes :D

Also, inspired by lippy, i'm going to be pondering my savings some more  i currently spend all of my income. I use the principle of paying myself first (i think thats what i'm doing anyway) as i overpay the mortgage by £800 straight away as to me that's a non-negotiable bill. i have my regular bills and savings accounts and the amount i pay to the credit card debt each month too. obviously, once the card bills are paid i'll have more money to save but i'm an impatient bean and want to see the cards paid and savings happening a bit faster :o Hmm... wonders off to ponder some more

It's been about a week since my last post so what's been going on?

A busy week in work which saw me spending £2.90 on takeaway at the end of the week & wasting the 50p meal i had planned :naughty: Must do better.

Overall i think it's been a bit of a spendy week - some of this has been with the intention to save money in the long run - bought as many treats for our cats as i could when i found some at half the price we usually pay (xmas clearance). Also stocked up on some essentials which we usually buy every week - the freezer is bursting but these were reduced to 10% of the price - love finding those sticker reductions ;) Such a big reduction meant spend wasn't that much and overall food shopping - which includes cleaning products, alcohol, cat food and treats as well as food and some toiletries came in under the £40 i didn't want to spend over :T

Spent some of my xmas money on a new coat to replace a tatty one i'd got rid of but hadn't found a suitable replacement for in my price range - mucho bargainous in the sales :T Also got a new skirt - again to replace one already recycled as that was all it was suitable for - again a sale bargain  Added to my new work wardrobe with a couple of things i'd identified as needing - less than £5 an item - bought 2 skirts and a dress :T Time to stop the spending now though

Also had to buy new make-up - i did get 2 free gifts which i needed and so will use so thats good - make-up isn't the cheapest brand though but as i have had reactions from other products  i play it safe with this one and i do like it and eek it out as much as possible ;)

I've chased some of the money i'm due back - more to chase tomorrow and have added this into my diary. Some cashback will become payable though which is good :T

picked up a freebie as well whilst out getting my make-up - again a need :j

Checked mortgage balance and interest - must add balance into my sig..

In other news I'd better get on with some studying - where does the week go that its left til Sunday? :rotfl::rotfl:

Also, i've a few things on my mind at the moment - things i'm considering doing this year - helping with a soup kitchen, going to a climbing wall to learn climbing, buying roller skates and re-learning how to skate, keeping up with my music lessons, running a regular half marathon.

Think i needs me a timetable.

Well i've just done another module on my course and i've also paid for another course  I know i said the spending had to stop but this course will really help me with my career & there's no point delaying starting it - the sooner i start, the sooner i'm qualified, also the sooner i start the quicker i can implement learnings into my job - i'd love a payrise this year and want to show a consistent improvement in my work ;)

My course materials should be delivered in a few days so i need to try and complete the course i'm on before then really  - i imagine i'll be having a fair few breaks on here throughout the studying day then ;)

I've also put actions in my diary so i can start to move some plans for things forwards such as the climbing etc :D Right, back to it
