Ryanair cabin baggage- how strict

When we decided to do short trip and thus relying on just cabin bags, I noted all sizes from various airlines. Budget as well as others.
Then using the smallest dimensions searched.for a case.
My search got us the following from decathlon. Used for several short breaks and one main holiday so far. Still in good condition too. And holds a reasonable amount.

Costs £11.99

And even more importantly they fit Ryan air allowed cabin bag size.

Might be worth getting a cheap bag for this trip as it'll be cheaper to buy new bag than pay the excess if they are being strict

You need to bear in mind that Ryanair now allow you 2 pieces of handluggage, the smaller one is to allow you to put valuables etc in because they only allow the 1st 90 large items of hand luggage into the cabin. Those after no 90 are put in the hold at the gate free of charge.

But there lies my problem. We are flying out with Monarch & they don't allow 2 bags, although there cabin bag measurements are slightly larger than Ryanair (25cm depth). Why can't the budget airlines agree to allow the same measurements?

Commercial reasons/advantage over other airlines.

It does tick me off at times on the sizing when some airlines will specify on the length measurement as being 55cm and others 56cm. You would think that some common sense might come into play over 1cm!

It would make sense to have a common size however when IATA tried to introduce this plan a couple of years ago there was general outrage from all, including passengers.

Just flown our with Ryanair, measurement cage not even looked at but people with wheely trolley bags were asked to put in hold for free, we both had Cabin Max backpacks and were waved through...similar story for easy jet on return but a woman near us had a tall but narrow backpack and was made to put that in the hold.

Monarch will allow you to carry a "small duty free bag" as well as hand luggage.
On our recent trip I carried hand luggage (within the specifications) plus an M&S carrier bag for book, newspaper, handbag. This was placed under the seat in front and wasn't a problem.

I have been using Ryanair since 2004.
And they have never checked my cabin bags, I think now they operate similar to EasyJet, you can carry as much weight as you can but the bag needs to fit in their measurement cage at the gate, should they need to check it.

I have carried over 14kg in my cabin bag, the bag would have fitted in their cage easily, as it was only 2 heavy electronic equipments.

Flew on 2 return journeys with Ryanair over the summer and they seemed very relaxed with hand luggage- that said we didn't see anyone obviously taking the mick when it came to size and weight.
