But have you ever been in that position? My family includes a branch with a hereditary condition which until recently was undiagnosed (yes, it features in another House MD episode, I learned about some interesting symptoms through that LOL). It causes pain, digestive problems, multiple organ failure, death by 40 if untreated etc. but when it comes down to the choice of whether to have children or not - well, it's obviously not so simple when it's you having to make that choice. Thankfully for us the gene can't pass from father to son - but pity the man who takes the risk and has only daughters when his brother has only sons. Ironically, because the symptoms don't manifest immediately there is no assistance with conception so it's a choice of stay childless, adopt or spin the wheel and see what you end up with. There are a great many other options it does not mean having to be childless but to do so knowingly would be just selfish in my opinion."Life is what you make of it, whoever got anywhere without some passion and ambition?0

Sorry Jetta, I can't think of any options other than the 3 I listed - well, not unless you have the money to pay for each foetus to be genetically checked. I understand it's your opinion but as I said, from close proximity to people who have had to make this decision it's not quite as clear cut, even when the people making the decision would generally be considered thoughtful, considerate, logical and as far from selfish as is possible to imagine.Eat food. UnThanks!
I'm sorry it may only be a TV programme but it echoed exactly what I had been worried about recently. Any other timing and I probably would have been fine with it.
The other reason why I am slightly annoyed is doctors don't seem to know what Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome is. So for a big TV programme like House to talk about it, is good. Only if they do it properly though.
Interestingly today I saw this on BBC News...

I would talk to my doctor but they don't know anything about this condition. Or if they do, then they know it's name and what their book tells them. As there is a huge difference between types, such as Vascular and Hypermobility, anything they do tell me (from their book) is usually irrelevant. I'm trying to see a specialist but there are none in my area and my case is currently at the PCT to see if they are willing to let me see a specialist out of area. They told me there was a month wait, that was a few days ago. Today I asked them and they said wait a few more weeks. They probably will come back and say no I can't see a specialist.0 -
So the content wasn't actually offensive or all that misleading but it didn't match your exact perception of your illness and also (correctly) pointed out an increased miscarriage risk linked with the illness which you don't like because you might miscarry?0

Stop thinking you can put words in my mouth.
The content was very misleading. You don't diagnose Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome from a heart attack and some miscarriages. You look at the family history, the joint problems they have, the hypermobility problems. Oh and a skin biopsy to look for mutations (collagen defects in type 3).
It doesn't match anyone's perception of this disorder. There is a similar thread on the Ehlers-Danlos forum which I found after posting here.
There is maybe an increased miscarriage risk but not to the extent that it is the only diagnosis. According to the TV programme, she will always miscarry which is simply untrue.
My problem is not with the miscarrying, I don't have a problem with that. I understand that I might miscarry and I am prepared for that. My fear was that I would have problems with the actual labour. I do not fear that anymore as thanks to someone earlier who suggested reading the official forum.0 -
Oh, not this stupid episode again. I've been hearing about this from several people. It's complete b.s. -- take it from someone who has EDS and has done epic amounts of research on her condition and knows they're wrong -- I wish they'd never aired it.
GlasweJen: sorry, but what you're saying is ridiculous in this particular case. Seems like you don't know that much about EDS either!
Olokia: Don't worry too much. It sounds like you have the condition pretty mildly for having it at all, and, though this illness does get worse from parent to child in most cases, any child you have who has it shouldn't be too badly-affected - though I wouldn't be sure about your biological grandchildren, if one of your children also winds up with EDS. But it's 50% heritability, autosomal dominant, so it really is an almost coin-flipping draw. My grandad and my dad both had/have it, and I have it, but my younger sister does not.
For people like me, having biological children would be one of the worst things I could do -- I was disabled by EDS already when I hit 20 -- but for people like you, not so badly affected and with hypermobility type, I would recommend you go for a bio-kid if you want one, but, make sure the docs keep a close eye on you in case the extra hormones make you dislocate more.Homosexual, Unitarian, young, British, female, disabled. I don't need to know about EDS, I just need to know that House is a fictional programme that follows a doctor who takes on outrageous cases and also has mental health problems and addiction issues. The programme is not in any way put forward as a factual programme so why the offence that they featured an illness?
I know a lot about my illnesses which were featured in House and were inaccurately represented, I don't come onto a money saving website and complain about it, I just watch it and wait on the next episode (cos I'm a fan and don't watch for the medical content).0
