Re: Museums
a lot of them depend on grants and subsidis from the council, lottery etc. its a bit of a hit and miss thing wether thats enough for them to run opening for free, or if they need to charge to make up the shortfall.

I liked The Castle Museum at York
I do not think it is free
It has some Victorian China Fairings in it.
You could buy about 250 ! of them for a pound from about 1850 to 1920.
They then stopped making them.
If you don't know what they look like
visit the web site at victorianfairings
There are 27 shown there.
I have got about 50
The world record price for a rare one is now £3200.
The cheapest start at about £40

Re: Museums
Have to say that the Imperial War Museum in London is fantastic and free. I laughed at my dad spending 5hrs in there, but then I went, spent 2hrs in there (all the time that we could afford) and barely scratched the surface. They've got a 1940s house - really good and a World War I trench - with sounds and smells. Well worth it.
