Affordable accommodation in Sydney

Hi, looking for suggestions for affordable accommodation for a couple in Sydney. We want to be close enough to be able to get around and see the sights etc. We are well past backpacker age, so perhaps motels etc? Also willing to think of apartment perhaps. We are there for up to 10 days, plans yet to be finalised.
Suggestions please from those with experience.

On my first visits, I would stay in Elizabeth Bay and Potts Point. I would also put Rushcutter's Bay in there.

We were in your situation 6 years ago; we stayed here:

Central enough (Potts Point), budget price, clean enough, good enough. The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0 -
Perhaps look at Sydney's public transport maps to get a feel for districts and how to get about. Will you want to do a trip to the blue mountains?Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

Yes, we will be wanting to visit the Blue Mountains. We've got 10 days available before heading over to Perth and have no itinerary as yet so open to suggestions on where/what to see, whether to hire a car and, if so, where to go.0

What time of year will you be visiting?
We did a day trip to the blue mountains on the train, which was easy.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0 -
Don't waste too much time in the city.

Ok, I know it's a hostel but they have private rooms and it's a really good location. It's clean, not full of kids, when I stayed a few years ago lots of people were older/ retired. Have a read of the reviews before you dismiss it even though it's technically a hostel https://www.yha.com.au/hostels/nsw/sydney-surrounds/sydney-harbour/?gclid=CIDg0aKC288CFdQ_GwodBKwESg0
