Money Moral Dilemma: Should I share my restaurant vouchers?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...
I'm going to a restaurant with a group of friends later and I've exchanged some loyalty points for vouchers that I plan on using - is it stingy of me not to share them with the rest of the group?

Unfortunately the MSE team can't always answer money moral dilemma questions as contributions are often emailed in or suggested in person. They are intended to be enjoyed as a point of debate and discussed at face value.

You got the loyalty points by spending your money, not your friends money. They aren't "free" points, you paid for them, your friends didn't. No need to feel stingy.

Think of it another way. If you pay the bill with a credit card and get a cash back, would you feel stingy not sharing that?

In your situation I would be having double helping of pudding.

    OMG

    not this as a thread???:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Surely the original thread was scary enough that we don't have to revisit it in this imaginary scenario

I'm pretty sure that thread caused a few breakdowns ....

    Yikes!

    Here we go....

There is NO way I would got out with friends and just use my OWN vouchers for me alone... EVER! We are a group and that is that.

I would keep the vouchers for another time with family. End of. No worries there eh?

    Cheezus.

Why on earth wouldn't you use vouchers in a group????

I really cannot see anything wrong with doing that. If I had vouchers that I'd got somehow, like through a supermarket or whatever, I wouldn't think twice about using them.

I'm fascinated as to why you think it would be so wrong to do so?

But you think ok with family too. Surely your friends are like family?!

I'm not having a go - don't get me wrong - but I really do not understand your post!
  • Absolutely fine to use your vouchers - if I was out in a group and you used them I wouldn't mind at all, in fact I'd be envious of not having got any myself!

Good on yer! Go for it :)

My friends have used vouchers while out with me and I've never even considered it a problem, it's not like they're free, you saved up for them, they're like ash really. Having said that I did get to benefit as they had more vouchers than their meals cost so used the leftover towards my meal which so good for me too.

I would only use a voucher with close friends not a large group. In a larger group splitting the bill is often a hassle and a voucher would complicate things more. Would I also think about what people who don't know me so well think? Maybe.

With just one or two friends I would want to share/be generous. For example, I've used a quadruple Tesco points in Cafe Rouge with a friend to make lunch out better value for us both.

I also look for any general vouchers/deals which will reduce the bill for all where ever a group is going - I find it amazing how many people don't think of it - this has always been well received.

Using a voucher for just yourself is absolutely fine, it makes no odds to anyone else as is just like paying cash for your bit.

If we're splitting the bill which I usually do with friends, I've used vouchers before and said I can either pay just for myself and let them pay full price or I can use vouchers for all of us and let them have theirs half price. They get a choice and are usually happy to get their meal half price.
  • Like most posters above, I see no reason not to use your vouchers. You earned the points with your spending. The only complication might be if the restaurant has a limit on the number of vouchers used per table and other people want to use vouchers too.

In our situation, where friends and family have vouchers, we look to see which have the most value or are expiring soon, and use those ones first. No one has ever said it's stingy of one person to pay or part pay with vouchers even if said vouchers only benefit one person.

Surely sharing good fortune is what friendship is about, isn't it?

But if you really don't want to do that, save the vouchers for another time when it's just you and/or family
