One victim reported purchasing over 15 iTunes gift card vouchers from high street retailer Argos at £100 each and handing their serial numbers over to fraudsters on the phone after receiving an automated voice message. Another victim handed gift card voucher codes worth £15,000 after receiving a cold call.

Rich and dumb, what a combo

I can understand someone being gullible enough to send cash to "HMRC", but iTunes vouchers? That's not gullible, that's plain stupid.

    Really?

If you have overpaid tax during the year then it will be repaid once the record has been reviewed at the end of the tax year. The process runs generally between June and October.

If you do Self Assessment, then HMRC will send you a calculation from this submission if you complete the paper form, otherwise the online service provides you with a calculation.

So your comment is wrong. HMRC do tell you when they owe you money, they just don't notify or tell you how much repayments are over the phone or by email/text/tweet/facebook etc etc...

Regarding bogus contact, it makes no difference how many times people are told not to give personal details when they receive texts/emails/phone calls etc, there are hundreds of people who do it week after week.

I spent 25 minutes trying to convince a taxpayer on Monday that the bank AND credit card details he gave via an email the other day were not given to HMRC and in fact he isn't due a repayment, and that he was most likely the victim of a scam.

He's apparently reporting me, personally, to the police for fraud as he believes I have stolen his details. (He has my name as I'm required to give it), but clearly this person obviously didn't take the news well that he'd been scammed and decided to take it out on me, which is fair enough. It doesn't help his case though.

Unfortunately people do, and will continue to fall for these scams

"Between April 2015 and March 2016, HMRC did the following:

Blocked eight million malicious emails destined for taxpayers"

How did they manage to do that??

My mother fell for something similar. She was in the early stages of dementia, and paid out about £5k to various scams. Social services said she had capacity, so refused to support us in encouraging her to move closer to family, where she could be better cared for.

I just had the call, but they hung up when I pressed 1
