Money Moral Dilemma: Should we contribute to my brother's bus lane fine?

This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks...

On New Year's Eve my brother kindly offered to drive me and my bofriend the two hours to a house party in London we were all going to, as I'm not comfortable driving on the motorway. On the way he accidentally moved into a bus lane for a moment. He's now received a fine and is asking if we will contribute - should we?

He offered to drive. He was therefore voluntarily making the journey. He was in charge of the vehicle. Therefore it's his fault, and his fine to pay.

However he's your brother. It might be better to make a contribution than fall out with him and cause a family rift :)

Do we really really believe that someone would offer to drive someone on a 4 hour round trip on New Year's Eve?
    Seriously?

Of course. Plus the going black cab rate for NYE. And probably for his MOT, car tax and insurance for the year so you can ask for a lift this year too..

If this is indeed true, then yes I absolutely WOULD offer to pay half of the fine.

This has happened to me - when I was in a city I didn't know - and the fine was £80. It was reduced to £40 if I paid within 14 days.

So I am SURE the 'moneysaver with the dilemma' can cough up £20! It would have cost more for a flamin' taxi on new year's eve for two 2 hour trips!

Me and my wife were going to a party (which we didn't go to as we were a bit ill with a cold,) and it was only half an hour drive there, and the taxi wanted to charge us £40 there and £70 back, because it was new year's eve!

So if the guy DID take you on a 4 hour round trip on New year's eve, and incurred a fine for driving in the bus lane, then cough up and pay half!

I know he was going on that journey as well, but without him, you would have paid 3 figures to get there and back in a taxi for such a long journey!
    You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:

    Yes, you should

because we can all make a silly mistake while driving
because he already saved you a load of money and hassle
because you might want him to oblige you in the future
but most of all because if you don't, you'll never hear the end of it!

So he was doing the driving which means he couldn't have a bevvy on Hogmanay PLUS he got a fine and all because of you.

It's not a case of contributing , you pay the full whack.
