Should my friend contribute to vet fees?

A friend was walking my dog Nutmeg last week when Nutmeg ran into some barbed wire no one knew was there. The vet cost me over £300, but my attitude is, she's my dog, so my responsibility.
However, my friend feels guilty and has offered to pay half the vet fees. I want to decline but my husband feels my friend should have been more careful and wants me to accept her offer. What should I do?

If it were me, I wouldn't let her pay half. She has shown to be a true friend simply by offering and must be feeling awful about an accident that could have just as easily have happened when you were walking the dog. IMHO, if you accepted her offer, its almost saying that you held her responsible.

She was doing you a favour walking your dog. You said yourself no-one knew the barbed wire was there. Accidents happen, I wouldn't accept any money for something that wasn't anyone's fault. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I'd accept and treasure such a thoughtful friend.0

No insurance? I don't think you should take the money from your friend as it was an accident.0

I agree. If she has offered to pay half, that's very kind of her.
And as you won't accept half that, that's very kind of you.
Tell her it's OK, and that she need not pay.
Hope Nutmeg is OK now!You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Depends if she had let the dog off the lead or not. If she had then she has to take some responsibility and you should accept the money.0

I wouldn't accept, no. She isn't responsible for an accident that happened while she was, essentially, doing you a favour.
She sounds like a great friend, though0 -
I would say thank you for the offer but a new dog toy would be more appreciated
I hope you're dog is okay now

Maybe accept some of it - IF you're hard up - whilst having made it as clear as possible that "there's no need / only if you're sure".
Also, pet insurance FTW :-)0 -
Not for an accident .....
My neighbour walks my dog - i know he takes the utmost care of her but accidents can happen - if one did, i certainly wouldnt expect him to pay the bill!
Even if you cant afford full insurance / choose to self insure, you can get Accident & Injury insurance - which would have covered these costs minus a small excess! - and its only about £6 / month!
Might be worth looking into ...... Accidents happen .......
