UPDATED QUESTION PLEASE....

I'm wondering if I should consider going to a chiropractor instead?

2 visits to the physio haven't really helped tbh, the physio is lovely but I'm still in as much pain as I ever was. I've been doing the small exercises advised but I see no improvement. I'm in the same state now as I was before but I'm £80 lighter.

Anyone advise about chiropractors? A quick google suggests they deal with muscles as well as joints, soft tissue etc.

I'm not very stoic when it comes to constant pain I'm afraid. :undecided

I have a muscle problem that I've had on and off for yonks. Doc says it's cos I'm so fat and unfit and have poor posture from all the couch sitting I've done. (Although he was more tactful than that. :D)

Normally a few days of ibuprofen sorts it out but this time it's worse, it's lasting longer and it's sorer. It affects my upper back/left shoulder, kinda where the shoulder blade joins the back ifyswim. I've been in bed with a streaming cold for the past few days which is why this has flared up again now.

Doc told me to exercise last time but I never did :o and I can't remember what exercises I was to do to try to strengthen the area.

I need to make the effort now though as it's just getting worse and today's pain is really quite bad. I've googled but I'm finding loads of exercises for a frozen shoulder but not really much relating to my muscle pain. Anyone got any pointers or links to specific things that might relate to my issue?

Swimming might be good in general?

You're probably right actually. Only it's not an option for now. :)

I find accupuncture really helps when I have pain and a couple of sessions later it has gone and I can get back to being a fat couch sitting individual again lol.

With regards to exercise can you go back to your GP for advise or a physio referral rather than risk doing more harm by doing the wrong exercises. The other option is to do some really intensive exercise and injure yourself elsewhere which will take your mind off it....

On a more helpful suggestion if you are laid up with the cold, this is probably not the time to start exercising, how about a trip to the leisure centre/gym for a sauna or steam room to get some heat about your joints and sweat out some toxins?

Not necessarily, especially if this is a rotator cuff problem which is a strong possibility. Swimming could compound the problem.

Hi OP, you really need to see a physio, either from a referral via GP or make an appt privately with a local sports physio to identify which muscle is actually causing the pain as there are several within the shoulder structure. It's impossible to give advice or suggest rehab exercises via the internet.

You need to seek a physio referral as above. Either seek a referral privately which means you'll get seen quickly, or ask your GP to refer you which might take some time. Don't try & second guess which exercises you should be doing, you could make the problem worse. If you struggle to remember the exercises, ask for them to be written down so you can do them however frequently is recommended to aid your recovery. Good luck

You don't need a referral to see a private physio, you just phone up and make an appt with them directly.

You really do need a physio to advise on the best exercises, as different areas and different problems need to be managed in different ways. But as somebody who's had a lot of back/shoulder/neck issues with postural factors there's a few things that I know I always try to do better now. Firstly try not to spend too much time sitting - I have a desk job and it's easy to end up sitting at the PC for hours on end, so now I do make an effort to get up every 20 mins even if just to stand for a minute or so. Have a chair that supports you well and your desk set out so you're not stretching for things. Mouse should be close by, height should be so that elbows are at around 90 degrees and not reaching forward. Don't cross your legs when sitting. Try to be facing forward - I found in many meetings I was sideways on to the presenter, and at home would be angled when watching TV. Now I make sure I sit facing whatever it is I'm looking at. Those are all things that will help anybody with poor posture but to target the pain better you will need advice from a qualified person

    Thanks for the advice everyone.

I've now seen a physio. I have some exercises to do to strengthen the weaker side and encourage more movement so hopefully it will help. I have another app soon.

I hope she doesn't feel the need to see me too regularly though, it's quite a costly process. I know the Doc can refer you for physio but that can take weeks or months (been there before) and I don't think I could have handled the pain that long, painkillers weren't working and the pain was enough to put me to bed tbh. Just need to see how it goes I suppose.

    Anyway, thanks again. :)
