6 months out of work and still no luck

I feel sorry for the OP with some of the horrible advice people have given. Kick him out? Geez. There's guiding people then there's being straight up harsh. She's clearly going through a hard time and her son is obviously not on the X-Box all day every day seeing as he is constantly applying for work (and the subscription is hardly £50 a month) and is getting interviews but not having any luck with them. So how about you cut out the patronising comments? Fair enough if he was lazy and expected people to give him hand outs but it's obviously not the case.
Also - You don't just develop social skills. They are learnt at a very young age. You can learn to develop some over time but it's much harder when you're older.
His CV and qualifications sound fine, the next step would be to continue applying for jobs and to seek advice on voluntary work. Opportunities could crop up at any time.
Good luck and ignore the holier-than-thou attitude of some of the members here.
if you read the rest of the posts, its pretty clear the OP doesn't want advice about helping get a job or saving money, shes just interested in getting more benefits0 -

I have read them. She sounds like she's struggling and isn't having any luck with jobs so of course she's going to ask about potential benefits.0 -

My social skills are much better than whe I was at school, at school I didn't really socialise out of school yet since I got my first job my social skills have improved just from talking to others whether in work or out of work.
I was just basing it on my experience.
Yes he can get interviews yet he hasn't had any job offers ?0 -
Can he not do something off his own bat like dog-walking, grass cutting, a spare pair of hands when something needs doing? Get some cheap flyers made or put some cards in the local newsagents' windows. Make sure everybody in your social circle knows as well. The social interaction might also help him become a slightly livelier ant..0

I guess so, what's your point?

Well in theory his JSA is there to cover his food etc and I don't mean to be crass but an XBox subscription isn't built into the JSA payment.THe question i suppose is - Is it right that i am having to support him for nothing? as I suppose I give it another month or 2 before I just wont be able to have enough money to pay the rent etc as my savings will run out.
As regards a lack of work experience this is normally the major issue - I would suggest he does some voluntary work to get something onto his CV. That would also negate the XBox subscription as he would have something to do. As someone else mentioned I would say an apprenticeship sounds the way to go.
As regards rent, no the government says if he lives at home there is no contribution payable. That is down to the ballot box I'm afraid.0 -
Op as you are renting you should be able to claim some non dependant housing benefit for your son, depending on your wage. I am working and I get £42 a week for my 23 yr old as he is on JSA. Check with your council about non dependant benefits.
Good luck0 -
just so you holier than now types know, i am not just interested in what i can get for free. I would go out and work more hours if I didn't already work forty hours with a heart condition i take pills for. I am a bloody good mum, I have bought my children up on my own for 12 years and I have always chosen to work not bludge off the state. I know damn well my council has given housing preference to incoming foreign nationals and to people on benefits that have never worked and then did Avon on the side for extra.
I have known for years that the day would come when my salary would not cover my rent. I don't rent a big expensive house in fact you could not get a cheaper 3 bed house in my area than the one I live in. My landlord charges me £100 below the market rate. I love my son and i don't want to kick him out - its not his fault he has mental health issues.
Thank for the nice things said, I am looking into princes trust for him, and have told him he is to consider going back under the mental health team to get additional help getting a job. He is reluctant to do so as the meds had begun to give him stomach pains (a common side effect of ADD meds).
Oh and not a single parent by choice either, was married, he became a violent alcoholic so had to leave and 2 years ago died of alcohol related complications.
But I am not all the things people are claiming on here just a decent honest hard working tax payer trying to get by.Bankrupt 15/04/09 Discharged 28/10/09

He succesfully got passed the online application for an interview at McDonalds, was well excited about, after his experience at Dominos, part time while he was at college, felt he could possibly get this position. The manager interrogated him on why he'd been out of work for so long, what had he been doing to find a job, why had he not stayed in previous jobs,(got made redundant from last job). Told him that anyone out of work that long was obviously not seriously looking for work just going through motions to keep JSA. At which point I feel Jacks tolerance levels abated. I feel a visit to this nasty little man coming on.Bankrupt 15/04/09 Discharged 28/10/09
