Closing a Ryanair Cash Passport

So that my Ryanair cash passport didn't start incurring a £2.50-a-month dormancy fee, I thought I had better close the account.

I spend the balance on an Amazon gift voucher, allowing 50p for the transaction fee and a 1p remaining balance.

I logged onto my account but found there is no option to close the card.

They won't close the card by email, so I phoned up and entered by card number twice but it said that is an invalid number and just hung up on me.

I then read on a forum that there is a £6 fee to close the account, really?! I only have a 1p balance.

This is madness, an awful card. I can't even just leave it to expire, as it will run to 09/14 charging £2.50 dormancy fees and £10.00 negative balance fees.

Has anyone managed to close one of these? I guess I will have to write a letter. As I am not asking for any balance to be returned, hopefully they will close it without charge.

Good point - I've still got one of these gathering dust...

There's no fee to close the card - the £6 is for retrieving any cash balance left on it.

As for dormancy fees, I was charged 34p back in January because I haven't used the card for ages. Since then they haven't charged me anything, and my balance is showing as zero.

According to the T&C, you can end the agreement by writing to or emailing card services. Maybe you should try emailing them again and suggest they look at clause 8.3 of http://www.cashpassport.com/1/Global/Terms%20and%20Conditions/Ryanair/terms_conditions.pdf

    Thanks, I will try email.

I could just let the card expire, but I was worried the dormancy fees would put it into a negative balance triggering the £10 charge.

These cards aren't supposed to be able to go into a negative balance and there is no credit agreement.

At a guess, I'd say that the £10 charge is there to cover exceptional circumstances, e.g. if you transfer money onto the card and spend some of it, but the transfer is later reversed because it was found to be fraudulent, thereby putting the card into a negative balance.

They have agreed to close the card by email and donate the remaining balance to Unicef. The £6 fee is only if the cardholder wants the money back. Got there in the end!
