One way flight vs Return Flight

My Employer will pay for me to book a one-way flight but I found out that the return is cheaper which seems crazy.

Whilst I would like the return leg, I would have to pay half the flight cost myself if I book the return flight according to their rules.

This seems crazy to me as I am trying to save them money and book a return, but they say they will charge me even though the return is less than the one way that they are prepared to pay.

Just wondering what to do. Should I pay the one way only and claim it back or book the return but then I will have to pay half the flight cost.

Has anyone else come across this before?
Titch :)

Can't you just tell your employer what you have just posted, explaining that a return would be the cheapest option? Surely they would accept that and allow you to book on that basis.

As Westin says, talk to your employer and aee if they have a good reason for their policy. If not then, personally, I would play by their rules and let them pay the more expensive option, rather than be out of pocket myself.

The cheapest return fares are usually the least flexible tickets, no changes no refunds etc. but as long as you use the first part, there is no need to use the return portion.

Two single tickets, although a lot more expensive, will give them greater flexibility to extend or reduce your stay if the work goes well or hits unexpected problems.

I'm a little confused, why would your employer send you somewhere but not pay for you to come back?

If you did get and use the return ticket then surely you would have to buy another single ticket to end up back where your employer sent you?

I'm not an accountant but if your employer paid for the return ticket, of which only the outbound leg was for business use, then wouldn't you be liable to pay tax on the cost of the inbound leg?

Apologies if I have misunderstood the situation.

could be the person has been working overseas for some time, and is now returning to the UK. So only a one-way would be required.
