The Council Tax Change - Housing Benefits

Hi,

We will soon be moving into our first home and we will be claiming housing benefits while we our currently unemployed.

I believe you will no longer qualify for your council tax being paid for. Is this true?

Is there anything else we can claim to help support us with the council tax? If so, how much will we receive.

Bellow is a little bit of information to help you answer my question:

2 Adults claiming JSA - £223 Per 2 weeks, joint claim
1 Bedroom House
Area: Warrington
Council Tax Band: B
House Rent: 98PW

you will be entitled to council tax support. how much you will have to contribute towards it dpends entirely on your local authorities policy.
it can reange from 0% to 30% as each authority decides whay percentage they charge indviually.
are you renting privately or from your council/housing association?
if council or HA your rent will be met in full as you are in the correct sized property.
if it is a private let, it would depend on your local housing allowance rate for a 1 bed property

According to your council website your local housing allowance is £92.31 per week. You will have to find the extra yourselves.

Also you will have to pay 8.5% of your council tax bill.
  • Council Tax Benefit was scrapped and replaced by Local Council Tax Support.

The LCTS is different for each local authority so it would depend on what scheme you local authority runs on how much help you will get
These are my own views and you should seek advice from your local Benefits Department or CAB.

your LHA rate for a 1 bed is £92.31 so you would need to top your rent up by £5.69 a week from your current benefits. you need to explore the amount of council tax support you will receive

So we our still entitled to claim for council tax, and this is called Council Tax Support?

Also, the only cost we will be paying towards our council tax is £5.69PW ?

Someone above asked.. the house is privately owned.

Read the posts again, nobody can tell you what CTS you are entitled to because we don't know what council tax would be due on your house. Someone has kindly looked up the % of the bill you will have to pay which is 8.5%.

The reference to £5.69 per week is the amount of your rent you will have to pay as Local Housing Allowance will not cover it all.

Here's hoping one of you get a job soon!

  • Can anyone also tell me if our JSA allowance will change when we claim housing benefits?

we currently receive £223 every 2 weeks on a joint claim (both aged 22).

No. The two are not linked.

Sorry, could you please explain? If we can't claim JSA while claiming housing benefits, how would we be able to afford living expenses?

Sorry for the blunt answers, we haven't a clue to go about it, its our first house!.

you can claim JSA the two are not linked. JSA will not be reduced.

although why not wait until one or both of you are in employment? will your JSA be enough for the rest of your rent, council tax, gas and electricity (electricity is a lot) and possibly internet. Plus food and travel to interviews etc
