I wouldn't say fuel is optional. Whether you drive or not, every single person will pay it... directly or indirectly. Alcohol on the other hand should be taxed to the limits, no one needs alcohol in order to survive.
Most of the non-drivers I know think fuel duty should be considerably more because of the pollution but many don't think about how that'll effect the price they pay for food, public transport, the services they receive (and ultimately the engineers who work on the front line to keep those services running smoothly) and pretty much everything else they have to spend money on.We’ve had to remove your signature. Is it only me that smells a rat when the chancellor "drops the planned rise in fuel duty" when he won't even say what the rise was.
IMO he does nothing and gets praise from the gullible media.
It's not as if it's a new idea as it's been done before by Osborne and the previous labour government.

Then surely it would be in the chancellor's best interest to keep diesel prices low (majority of delivery vehicles etc) and increase petrol prices (majority of cars).
This would mean that diesel should be lower cost than petrol ...
