  • I wish they would do something about nuisance text messages too. I had stopped receiving them after those people were arrested a month or two ago, but now I have started receiving them again.

Surely it's not beyond the wit of man to device a system where we just press some keys on the phone to report these calls?

I don't know, but they have come up with a device to prevent the calls getting through in the first place :)

Alternatively, you can report silent calls using your computer and the internet :)

Same here. We seem to get at least one a day.

For me it would be almost pointless. Nearly all the nuisance calls I get (one a week, maybe) come up on the phone as "International" - which I don't believe anyone in the UK can do anything about.
So I see very little point in going to a lot of effort to reduce the number of nuisance calls that originate in the UK as it wouldn't scratch the surface.
  • We had so many we got caller I/D enabled, now if a cold caller phones we can see if it is genuine , if it is WITHHELD or INTERNATIONAL they just talk to our answering machine. On the odd occasion that it is genuine we phone them back.

Ever since I signed up to the Telephone Preference Service, the amount of nuisance telemarketing calls has reduced dramatically. I have though only just started to reconnect my landline back into the master socket after several months of it being unplugged from the wall. We only require the line for broadband, so usually, only the router is permanently connected. If I start receiving nuisance calls again on a regular basis, I'll just unplug the 'phone.

We haven't received a single nuisance call in the last three weeks except one from TalkTalk which I did consider a nuisance. Interesting to see from this article, that TalkTalk are apparently under investigation by OFCOM. Indeed I have personally taken three calls from TalkTalk operatives in the last two months trying to sell us a longer 'phone contract. They call from their offices in Cape Town, South Africa. I've told them on each occasion to stop calling. Now I know it appears they're under investigation, I can whack that one their way as a warning to lay off if they're stupid enough to bother me again.

My advice though to anyone who has received a nuisance or unwanted telemarketing call, is to dial 1471 immediately after the call. If they have been stupid enough not to hide their number, write it down with the time received and report them to OFCOM via their website. I have personally done this numerous times. The more people that complain about them, the better. Alternatively, pretend you're not the person they wish to speak to but the person they want is with you and you'll put them on the line and then just leave the 'phone off the hook so they are paying for the call. They'll soon realise you're wasting their time and money when all they hear is background noise for a couple of minutes. You could even put some music on in the background to play them at their own game!
  • We just changed our number again. We moved last summer and couldnt bring our 'clean' number with us, and bt gave us a new one, only it wasnt new or clean it was filthy dirty.. the first ever call was a nuisance call and it went steadily down hill from there. On average 5 a day, 3 of which were internationals or with helds. All of them we never answered but they still didnt stop. Most were silent calls or dead calls. Apparently numbers are taken out of service for 2 years, but judging by the amount of calls we got daily for the same name over and over it was not an old number at all. BT didnt charge us because we bided our time from first complaint and we did all they asked. Otherwise it would have cost £25. Still not good enough, really is it, Offcom? nope... wont work. Have told BT if this doesnt work, our account gets closed, they would loose broadband and vision as well as phone revenue from us, but really, for the peace and quiet, I would give it all up.
