This is the place to discuss places to find free e-books, as seen in the guide:

There are 1,000s of free and cheap e-books available if you know where to look. Plus you don't have to have an e-reader to get them.

If you've got any suggestions or questions about getting free e-books, please join in the discussion :)

Many thanks,

Best tip I can give - if you see an e-book on Amazon that you fancy and it's free/at an acceptable price for you (I only buy books under 20p) then get it right there and then! I've downloaded one book for free which is now £1.99 and yesterday, I didn't download a book that was 20p which is now £3.99! So keep an eye on it and if you think you'll want it, move fast. Conversely, books can go down as well as up so if you miss one you really want, chances are you will find it cheaper later on - just keep a note of it.

If you have a Prime account, you can take advantage of free books from the Amazon 'lending library', however I don't have a Prime account so I can't really comment on how good it is!

Well I made this post originally about 6 months ago, starting this thread back in July 2012.

Basically a HUGE NUMBER of FREE E-Books from AMAZON

At the time the search I suggested/provded found 34,317 - YES that IS THIRTY-FOUR THOUSAND plus

Currently the same search now lists 37,368 - ANOTHER 3000 added

There is also a link for getting the KINDLE READER for your PC
    (or Mac/iPad/iPhone/iPod touch/Android/Windows Phone)

I'm surprised that this isn't already here ....

... but I've searched and not found any reference ....

    Basically go to

    www.amazon.co.uk

    (Under SHOP ALL DEPARTMENTS)
    Select BOOKS > BOOKS

    Then click on ADVANCED SEARCH

Change FORMAT (Any Format) to KINDLE BOOKS
and SORT RESULTS BY (Relevance) to PRICE: LOW TO HIGH

    Click SEARCH NOW

    It will display 1 - 12 of 1.3 million

Scroll down till you see PRICE in the lefthand column
and the 2 boxes where you can enter "From" & "To" range values

ENTER 0.01 in the RIGHTHAND BOX and Click GO

    and BINGO

THIRTY-FOUR THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED and SEVENTEEN (-ish, well that's what it is right now)

    FREE KINDLE BOOKS

Subdivide by Genre by selecting from the left column

It is possible that THIS LINK will do all that for you

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=sr_nr_p_36_5?unfiltered=1&bbn=266239&sort=price&qid=1342631590&rh=n%3A266239%2Cp_n_binding_browse-bin%3A368165031&rnid=389022011&low-price=&high-price=0.01&x=5&y=9

AND IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT A KINDLE ?

Read them on your PC (or Mac/iPad/iPhone/iPod touch/Android/Windows Phone)

Just download Amazon's FREE Kindle Reader software

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_164007747_3?ie=UTF8&docId=1000425503&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-9&pf_rd_r=02PCY73NG6VHKHS7FXC1&pf_rd_t=1401&pf_rd_p=295622067&pf_rd_i=1000423913

The American publisher Baen Books lists science fiction and fantasy books, most of which are not free, but they also have a selection of completely free fairly modern titles for download, in several different formats, including for Kindle and Sony ereaders. Be aware that you need to click on the free download button, as the pay button is sometimes also on the same page. You can also make a donation to the free download library, although I haven't as yet, indeed I don't know how one would make a donation to a US site.

The site is undergoing reconstruction, but there are still a few books available.

  • I have a Kindle keyboard with over 1500 titles in my archives. I haven't paid for any of them, as they have all been available to download for free at the time. I wholeheartedly agree with Kiss_me_now9, who recommends that you download as soon as you see something that you want, if it is cheap/free, as prices often increase by the next day.

I find out which books are available for free from

    www.kuforum.co.uk
    or
    www.ereaderiq.co.uk

Both send out daily emails (if you subscribe) with a selection of books that are free that day. They also contain links to a larger selection of free books. KUForum allows you to choose which genres you want to receive details about, whereas ereader is more general. Both also automatically opt out of erotica titles, but you can opt in if required.

I believe that you can download onto your PC and read on that, but I haven't tried this. You can also download a free Kindle app onto an Ipad/Ipod. One of my sons has the Kindle Fire and the other has the app on his Ipad (which he also uses as a communaication device). Again, I have never paid anything for the books downloaded for either of the boys, as everything has been downloaded when free.

Just one point, though. As my boys are too young for their own Amazon accounts, downloads are activated through my account. Both can see what I have downloaded and can put onto their devices. It isn't a problem for me, but might be for some parents if their children are younger, or if they want to read erotica.

You have to do a review in return, but it's totally worth it, especially if you're a book blogger and you can request as many as you like.
  • Obooko.com is a fantastic site for up and coming authors and some published authors including Jeff Edwards. It is free to join and download. I've never had a problem in the years I've been with this company. Try it :D
  • This is amazing, I'm new to this forum and, although I actually joined to find out stuff about cheap groceries (I just got a new job which is about 13k less well paid than my last one - but it's ace so I dunno... anyway) but have found myself coming into threads like these. I LOVE my kindle so this is perfect - I had no idea you could get so many free from sites other than Amazon.

This is a great website, it searches amazon daily for free ebooks and arranges them in genres. Very useful! It's called freebooksifter, just google it, as a new user I can't post a direct link

FreebookSifter is a free tool which makes it easy to find free e-books for Kindle on Amazon.com. We update our database daily, removing books which are no longer free and adding any which have just come in.

  • Has anyone tried overdrive? You can use it on macs or windows pc's, windowsmobiles, androids, apple iphone/ipad or blackberry. Allowing you to borrowdigital books and audio books from your library if they are signed up using thelog in that you would use on the library computers usually your library cardnumber and a pin the library has given you. I means you can borrow up to fivebooks/audio book at a time for up to 21 days and they will return automaticallyat the end of the loan period no late fees. There is also a selection of booksmostly classics that you can borrow indefinitely. I have has this app on myiphone since march 2012 and i have devoured 57 books for free includingfiction, fact, biography, reference books.
